AQUEDUCT NOTES; WEDNESDAY, NOV. 19, 2008


Anak Nakal, who dead-heated for third with Ready’s Echo in the Belmont Stakes, is highweight at 121 pounds for Saturday’s 64th running of Aqueduct Racetrack’s Grade 3, $100,000-added Discovery Handicap for three-year-olds at nine furlongs.

Owned by Four Roses Thoroughbreds and trained by Hall of Famer Nick Zito, the son of 1998 Belmont Stakes winner Victory Gallop rebounded from a fifth-place finish in Saratoga’s Grade 2 Jim Dandy to win the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park by a neck. He comes into the Discovery off a troubled second to Arson Squad in the Grade 2 Meadowlands Cup last month.

BAZE RIDES THREE WINNERS, LEDEZMA HAS TRAINING DOUBLE


ALBANY -- Leading jockey Russell Baze won three races and trainer Sergio Ledezma saddled two winners Wednesday at Golden Gate Fields.

Baze, who tops the jockey standings with 69 victories at the fall meeting, guided the Ledezma-trained La Misteriosa ($5.40) to a two-length score in the first race. Baze came right back to take the second race with Tip Toe Topper ($5.60) and then completed his hat trick with a win aboard Go With Gusto ($11.80) in the fifth.

Turfway Park set to open Holiday Meet


FLORENCE, KY . . . November 18, 2008 . . . Live Thoroughbred racing returns to Turfway Park on Sunday, Nov. 30, the start of the Northern Kentucky track’s annual Holiday Meet. Highlighting opening day is the $50,000 Holiday Inaugural Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares.

Stakes racing continues each Saturday with the rest of the traditional line-up, each with a $50,000 purse:

ALL EHV-1 TEST RESULTS PROVE NEGATIVE AS LAUREL PARK RE-OPENS DOORS TO OFF SITE RUNNERS


LAUREL, MD. 11-18-08---With this morning’s announcement by the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) that the final 20 samples from Laurel Park’s Barn 1 tested negative for neurologic equine herpesvirus (EHV-1), the Maryland Jockey Club has amended its restrictions on off site runners racing at Laurel Park.

On November 14, one day after a two-year-old filly in King Leatherbury’s barn tested positive for EHV-1, the Maryland Jockey Club announced that until further notice no horses would be allowed to ship into Laurel Park except those from the Bowie Training Center. However with today’s news that all of the nearly 60 horses tested at Laurel Park are negative for the virus, the Laurel racing office will begin taking entries from other jurisdictions.

TOP HORSES SCHEDULED TO RUN AT GOLDEN GATE FIELDS


ALBANY -- Several talented horses will be in action this week at Golden Gate Fields when the track presents racing Wednesday through Sunday. Post time each day is 12:45 p.m.

Irish-bred Artiste Royal, a multiple Grade I stakes winner, is scheduled to run in the third race Friday. Trained by Neil Drysdale, Artiste Royal will face six rivals in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race on the Lakeside Turf Course.

Artiste Royal will be making his first start since winning the Grade 1 Charlie Whittingham Handicap at Hollywood Park on June 7. A consistent 7-year-old ridgling, Artiste Royal has finished in the money in 18 of his 25 career starts while earning $773,990.

CRIMINOLOGIST TO SUPPLEMENT FOR MATRIARCH

Criminologist, a multiple graded stakes winner, will be supplemented to the $500,000 Matriarch on Nov. 30 at Hollywood Park, trainer Shug McGaughey confirmed Wednesday from New York. The fee is $10,000 for the Grade I test for fillies and mares at one mile on turf.

“All systems are go,” said McGaughey from Belmont Park, where the 5-year-old mare has worked three times since a third-place finish as the favorite in the Oct. 11 Athenia Handicap.

Staten Islander Surges to Win Aqueduct Handicapping Challenge


Jerry McClenin, a 51-year-old printing press operator from Staten Island, N.Y., claimed the $35,000 grand prize in the Aqueduct Fall Handicapping Challenge this past weekend, defeating 206 contestants from 16 different states and three different countries en route to the victory.

Along with the second and third place finishers, McClenin will be on the three-member Aqueduct Racetrack team in the 2009 NTRA/Daily Racing Form National Handicapping Championship (NHC), to be held this coming January 23-24 at the Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa in Las Vegas. The NHC is giving out a grand total of $1 million in prize money with the first-place winner receiving $500,000 and the title of NTRA Handicapper of the Year, an honor the winner will receive at the 2008 Eclipse Awards, which will be held January 26, 2009, at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Fla.

Keeneland Concludes November Breeding Stock Sale


Lexington, KY (November 17, 2008) – Demand for quality individuals, particularly race mares and weanlings, remained strong during Keeneland’s recently concluded November Breeding Stock Sale, despite a market battered by the global financial crisis.

Gross receipts for the 15-day auction, held November 3-17, totaled $185,552,300, down 45.6 percent from last year’s record $340,877,200. Average price of $61,462 declined 39 percent from $100,821 reported in 2007. The median of $20,000 decreased 42.9 percent from last year’s $35,000. A total of 3,019 horses sold compared to 3,381 a year ago.

Active Duty salutes in Coronation Futurity


TORONTO, November 16 - Active Duty broke his maiden in style on Sunday, capturing the $250,000 Coronation Futurity at Woodbine.

The son of Deputy Commander took the lead at the top of the stretch from fellow Woodford Racing color-bearer Gallant and held off a mild bid from 1-2 favorite El Brujo, who was 2 1/4 lengths in arrears in the contest for two-year-olds, foaled in Canada.

Khabibulin finished third. Active Duty traveled 1 1/8 miles in 1:52.01.







 

EXERCISE RIDER DIES IN BARN AREA ACCIDENT


ALBANY -- Veteran exercise rider Ignacio Ramirez sustained fatal injuries Sunday morning when the horse he was aboard flipped over and fell on him in the barn area at Golden Gate Fields.

Ramirez, 58, had just left the barn and was heading to the racetrack for a workout when the filly he was riding became spooked by something and flipped over suddenly. The filly, a thoroughbred racehorse, was not injured.

Stallion Prospects Top Sunday at Keeneland


Lexington, KY (November 16, 2008) – Earth Planet and Major General, each sold as a racing or stallion prospect, headlined Sunday’s session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Oscar Lobo paid $60,000, the day’s highest price, for Earth Planet. The four-year-old colt is a half-brother by Distant View to several stakes winners, including Group 1 winner and European high weight Danehill.

I CAN SEE EYES $500,000 MATRIARCH CLOSING DAY OF TURF FESTIVAL

I Can See, a 5-year-old mare who has overcome the handicap of blindness in one eye to earn more than $400,000, worked five furlongs on turf in 1:01.60 Sunday at Hollywood Park for the $500,000 Matriarch on Nov. 30. The Grade I Matriarch, co-featured with the $500,000 Hollywood Derby on closing day of the three-day Turf Festival, is for fillies and mares at one mile on grass.

“She worked very nicely, as good as I could expect,” said trainer Steve Knapp after the drill under exercise rider Fernando Serna. “I will work here once more next Sunday, and if all goes well, she will run in The Matriarch.”
