10-HORSE FIFTH SEASON FIELD HIGHLIGHTS OPENING DAY


New Tote Boards, Digital Displays Among New Features

HOT SPRINGS, AR (Thursday, Jan. 12, 2016) – An evenly matched field of 10 is entered in the $125,000 Fifth Season Stakes Friday at Oaklawn, a 1 1/16-mile event for older horses that highlights a nine-race opening-day program. Probable post time for the Fifth Season, which goes as race 8, is 3:49 p.m. (Central). Racing is scheduled to begin at 12:35 p.m.

Multiple stakes winner Smack Smack is the 3-1 program favorite for trainer Don Von Hemel of Hot Springs and country music star Toby Keith, who bred and owns the 6-year-old Closing Argument gelding.

Holds Off State of Honor Length of Stretch for Third Straight Win

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Given a last-minute chance to stretch his talent beyond sprint distances, Calumet Farm’s Sonic Mule stubbornly held off a stretch-long challenge from State of Honor to win Saturday’s $100,000 Mucho Macho Man for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park.

The sixth running of the one-mile Mucho Macho Man was the last of four stakes worth $400,000 in purses on the 11-race card, following wins by Made You Look in the $100,000 Dania Beach (G3), Wildcat Kate in the $100,000 Old Hat and Bellavais in the $100,000 Ginger Brew.

“This horse is training better than he ever has. It’s amazing how good he’s doing,” trainer Art Sherman’s son and assistant Alan Sherman said. “He worked in 59-and-4 (seconds), just breezing.”

NYRA to offer $1 million bonus to Japan-based winner of 2017 Belmont Stakes


OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The New York Racing Association has announced a $1 million bonus to any Japan-based thoroughbred who competes in and wins the 149th running of the Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 10 at Belmont Park, the last and longest leg of racing's Triple Crown.

The entire $1 million bonus would be awarded to the winning horse's connections in addition to the $800,000 winner's share of the purse for the 1 ½-mile "Test of the Champion." In the event of a dead-heat for the win, the bonus will be $600,000.
