Fall Turf Festival Gets Under Way at Gulfstream Park West

MIAMI GARDENS, FL – The Fall Turf Festival at Gulfstream Park West got under way Saturday under blue skies following a three-day postponement prompted by the threat of Hurricane Matthew.

Unaffected by the Category 4 storm that stayed offshore, Gulfstream Park offered a 10-race card highlighted by a five-furlong turf allowance won by Arborville. The Rasharn Creque-trained 7-year-old fired fresh from a four-month layoff, chasing a sharp pace set by Zeus Odin into deep stretch before drawing clear by a half length. Sent to post as the 7-2 second choice in the featured eighth race, Arborville ran the distance in 57.38 seconds. Zeus Odin, a 45-1 outsider ridden by Samy Camacho, finished 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Final Encore, the 9-5 favorite who made a belated bid under Tyler Gaffalione.

$100,000 Tropical Turf Handicap (G3) Quotes

Trainer Marcus Vitali (Lochte): “I wasn’t concerned. I was actually hoping it came off the turf. I’ve been dying to try this horse (on the dirt). A long way back when we first got him, he ran in the wet at Gulfstream and got beat a nose, had a tough trip and still came running.

“I wasn’t too afraid of the wet turf. He’ll like a wet turf, this horse. This was a little more than wet. I didn’t get wet. I stayed inside and watched it. I saw him splashing through there and it looked like Matt made the right decisions today. I kind of left it up to him. I told him if it was a rough trip and he didn’t handle it, just take care of him and we’ll live for another day. He told me he was running well and he felt good and when he asked on him, he exploded.

$100,000 My Charmer Handicap (G3) Quotes

Trainer Bill Mott (Lady Lara): “The timing from her last race worked out well. We shipped her down here and we weren’t sure if we were going to run her. She took the ship well and seemed like she looked good and was training good, so we decided to go ahead and run.

“After we got around the first turn, it was great. She got around the first turn in good order, and she got a good post. She’s been unlucky if you look back, where she’s drawn the 13 and 14 hole several times. Today she was able to get an inside post so she could at least try to save a little ground around the first turn.
