AMERICAN ACT OVERCOMES TURN ISSUES IN HENSON; BEJARANO, DELGADILLO WIN PAIR ON OPENING


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 26, 2012)-Despite drifting out badly entering the stretch, favored American Act was able to get up and defeat Senor Rain by a nose in the $72,350 Harry Henson Stakes on Thursday, opening day of Betfair Hollywood Park’s Spring/Summer meet.

Ridden for the first time by Rafael Bejarano, the 3-year-old Quiet American gelding earned his second win in six starts for Howard and Janet Siegel Racing LLC and trainer Jack Carava.

NEREID RETURNS IN WILSHIRE HANDICAP SUNDAY


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 26, 2012)—Nereid, who finished in a dead heat with Cambina in the Grade I American Oaks last July 16, will make her 4-year-old debut in the $100,000 Wilshire Handicap Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

A Grade III at one mile on turf, the Wilshire is the eighth of nine races. Post time is 1 p.m.

MILADY H. TO BE RENAMED MARJORIE L. EVERETT; BETFAIR HOLLYWOOD PARK PLANS TRIBUTE


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 26, 2012)—Betfair Hollywood Park will pay tribute to former Hollywood Park chairman, president and chief operating officer Marje Everett Saturday, May 19.

To honor the memory of Everett, who passed away March 23 at 90, Betfair Hollywood Park will rename the Milady Handicap, a fixture on the Spring/Summer calendar, the Marjorie L. Everett Handicap.

KOBE BRYANT, PAU GASOL THE LATEST THOROUGHBRED OWNERS

Social media sites were buzzing Wednesday night with the news that Los Angeles Laker stars Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol purchased their first Thoroughbred.

“How exciting is that?,” said an excited Doug O’Neill, who has trained Siempre Mio for all five of his starts and will continue to handle the 4-year-old gelding for the new partnership.

BETFAIR HOLLYWOOD PARK KICKS OFF THURSDAY; AMERICAN ACT BACK ON TURF IN HARRY H


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 22, 2012)-American Act will return to turf in the $70,000-added Harry Henson Stakes when Betfair Hollywood Park kicks off its 73rd Spring/Summer meet Thursday.

A six furlong turf race for 3-year-olds, the Henson is the seventh of eight races. Post time is 1 p.m.

ACCLAMATION HEADS 14 NOMINEES TO INGLEWOOD HANDICAP


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 20, 2012)—Acclamation, the champion older male of 2011, is among the 14 older horses nominated to the $100,000 Inglewood Handicap at Betfair Hollywood Park.

A Grade III at 1 1/8 miles on turf, the Inglewood will highlight the first Friday night program (April 27) of the Spring/Summer meet. It is also the first graded event of the 50-day season.

BETFAIR HOLLYWOOD PARK WILL OFFER TURF SPRINTS FOR 2-YEAR-OLDS


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 20, 2012)—Martin Panza, racing secretary and vice president-racing, announced Friday that Betfair Hollywood Park will offer some maiden allowance turf sprints for 2-year-olds in June and July.

These races will help leading into some newly created turf stakes for juveniles that will be run later in the year at Del Mar and Santa Anita’s fall meet.

BETFAIR HOLLYWOOD PARK BEGINS THURSDAY, APRIL 26


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 13, 2012) — Betfair Hollywood Park will have live racing Thursday-Sunday for a majority of its 50-day Spring/Summer meet, which begins Thursday, April 26.

The two exceptions are special Monday racing May 28 (Memorial Day) and Wednesday, July 4.

AMAZOMBIE TOPS 148 CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH NOMINEES


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 10, 2012)—Amazombie, the champion sprinter of 2011, and Willa B Awesome, the upset winner of the Grade I Santa Anita Oaks March 31, are among the 148 nominees to the 13th California Gold Rush, which will be run Saturday, April 28 at Betfair Hollywood Park.

A series of eight races restricted to horses bred or sired in California – including a pair of maiden events (the Alphabet Kisses and NTRA Stakes) with $60,000 purses – the Gold Rush highlights the opening weekend of Betfair Hollywood Park’s 50-day Spring/Summer meet.

2-YEAR-OLD PURSE HIKES AT BETFAIR HOLLYWOOD PARK


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (March 29, 2012)—Betfair Hollywood Park has strengthened considerably its 2-year-olds stakes program for both the 2012 Spring/Summer and Autumn meets.

Purses for the Hollywood Juvenile Championship and the Landaluce, fixtures on the Spring/Summer calendar, have doubled from $100,000 to $200,000 while the Cinderella Stakes and Willard L. Proctor Memorial have gone from $70,000-added in 2011 to $100,000 this year.

FORMER HOLLYWOOD PARK CHAIRWOMAN MARJE EVERETT DIES AT 90


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (March 23, 2011)—Marje Everett, the longtime chairwoman of Hollywood Park, died Friday morning at her West Los Angeles home. She was 90.

A native of New York, Everett, who grew up in a racing family – her father Benjamin Lindheimer owned Arlington Park and the now defunct Washington Park in Illinois – spent a great portion of her adult life in race track management.

ENHANCED AMERICAN OAKS, GOLD CUP AMONG MEET HIGHLIGHTS


INGLEWOOD, Calif. (March 2, 2012) — The 73rd running of the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup and the American Oaks, which was increased from $250,000 to $400,000, headline a stakes schedule worth more than $6.8 million for the 2012 Spring/Summer meet at Hollywood Park.

The 50-day season begins Thursday, April 26 and continues through Sunday, July 15.
