$245,000 Melair Stakes

Jockey Quotes

RAFAEL BEJARANO, DOINGHARDTIMEAGAIN, Winner: “I had a good trip. They went a little slow the first part and I was hoping they would pick it up down the backstretch. Nobody was really making a move by the half mile so I decided to make a little move to put some pressure on. I really thought (Sweet Marini) should have beaten me because she was going so slow. But my filly is a real professional. I’m just glad I moved when I did.’’

Jockey Quotes

RAFAEL BEJARANO, SURFCUP, Winner: “He had never run on this track and I just tried to get him comfortable in the race. He was real relaxed in the beginning and when (Fighting Hussar) came running at the end, my horse gave me a big kick.

$73,600 Harry Henson Stakes Jockey Quotes

GARRETT GOMEZ, SUMMER EXCLUSIVE, Winner: "I had a dream trip, really. (Trainer) Pete (Miller) and I talked a little before the race and it ended up just like we thought. I ended up in an ideal spot. They weren't flying, but there were four of them across the track and it was just a matter of waiting to see who was going to be the first one to move forward and that I was going to follow. Finally, I decided to follow (Sacred Ovation) because it looked like he was traveling the best. I slid up inside, came around and I thought I could go and get him anytime I want. I had to work a little harder than I expected. You can throw his second race out (Santa Anita Derby) so today was kind of starting from scratch with him. Hopefully, this will build his confidence back up."

$200,000 King Glorious Stakes 1st Running 7 Furlongs

Jockey Quotes

JOSE VALDIVIA, JR. WEEWINNIN, Winner: “He’s been working like a good thing. I told (trainer) Brian (Koriner) he’s been working like a good horse and if you run him in a starter allowance, I think you’ll be giving away a good effort. He said ‘Come on, let’s take a shot.’ This colt is going to come back and show that he’s the real deal. I don’t think this race was a fluke.”

$750,000 CashCall Futurity QUOTES

Jockey Quotes

JAVIER CASTELLANO, VIOLENCE, Winner: "I positioned myself in a very good spot around the first turn and I believe that was the key to winning this race. You don´t want to be too far back particularly in a race for 2-year-olds. I had a lot of confidence in this colt. He is so calm and handles himself very professionally. I think he is a special horse and I am really looking forward to big times."

$250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup - QUOTES

Jockey Quotes

GARRETT GOMEZ, GRANDEUR, Winner: "I wasn´t happy with the horse I was following (Optimizer), I wanted to find my way around him and I thought about sliding my way through Slim Shadey but decided I didn´t like that option. As we approached the final turn I decided to take him outside of Optimizer and when I asked him he went on with it without a problem."

A MOREY FAMILY TRADITION; NOTHING BUT BILLS

Trainers are used to getting bills, but the Morey family produces them almost as fast.

Bill Morey, Jr., 72, has been a fixture in Northern California for decades and also has had ample success in this section of the state. When his son, William E. Morey, 38, followed in his footsteps, many couldn’t figure out who was the father and who was the son.

Native Diver Stakes QUOTES

Jockey Quotes

MIKE SMITH, GAME ON DUDE, Winner: “He had a little hiccup coming out of the gate. He was squatting a little. I have a couple of ideas maybe we’ll try (next time). The idea was just to stay out of his way. (Jockey) Martin (Pedroza) secured the lead (on Nonios) and if he wanted it going at a decent pace, I was going to let him have it. But he didn’t really go on and I was determined to stick him in there. I know this horse is brave, so I just put him where I thought I had to. He handled the track well. The key for me was to win, and if I could win without gutting him, it would be really good. I wanted to see if he’d fight, he acted like he would in the mornings, and he certainly did in the afternoon. He won pretty much within himself.”
