KENTUCKY DERBY NOTES

BRODY’S CAUSE/CHERRY WINE – Albaugh Family Stable’s Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (GI) winner Brody’s Cause galloped 1 ½ miles following the renovation break under exercise rider Miguel Garcia for trainer Dale Romans.
Also galloping the same distance after the break was William Pacella, Frank Jones Jr. and Frank Shoop’s Cherry Wine. Faustino Aguilar was aboard the son of Paddy O’Prado who stands 25th on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.
Romans said his Kentucky Derby hopefuls are possible to breeze Saturday morning.

KENTUCKY OAKS NOTES - Update: Friday, April 29, 2016


CARINA MIA – Three Chimneys Farm’s Carina Mia, 17th on the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard, galloped after the break under exercise rider Penny Gardiner.

DOTHRAKI QUEEN – Magdalena Racing’s Dothraki Queen, 16th on the Oaks leaderboard, worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 after the break under jockey Gary Stevens.
“She probably went in 1:01. She flew the last eighth,” Stevens said. “I had a test drive with her last week at Keeneland (in a work) and today she wanted to get down to business.”
Trained by Kenny McPeek, Dothraki Queen won the Pocahontas (GII) here in September. Should she not makes the Oaks field, the $150,000 Edgewood (GIII) presented by Forcht Bank run at 1 1/16 miles on the turf May 6 is considered her next option.

– Shadwell Stable’s Mohaymen, who had his five-race unbeaten streak snapped in the Florida Derby (Grade I) in his most recent start, put in his first work at Churchill Downs Wednesday in preparation for the $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) and it was a bullet.

KENTUCKY DERBY’S TOP THREE HAVE PREAKNESS ON RADAR


LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sunday, May 3, 2015) – To set the stage for his press conference Sunday morning to reflect on this fourth victory, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert brought the star of the 141st Kentucky Derby -- American Pharoah -- out of the barn to pose for the cameras.

Bribing him with carrots, Baffert led the Zayat Stables colt to different parts of the circle of media and fans for photos and admiration. Several people reached out and petted the colt’s nose. After about 10 minutes of show, Baffert sent American Pharoah back to his stall and moved into the tell part of the program.

Victor Espinoza, jockey of American Pharoah, winner – “I feel like the luckiest Mexican on Earth. He has been a special horse since the first time I rode him. He has a lot of talent and is an unbelievable horse. Turning for home I started riding a little harder. Trainer John Terranova has notified Kentucky Horse Racing Commission stewards that #7 El Kabeir has been scratched from Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. Post position No. 1 will be left open (no horse) and all others will slide down with no gaps. Program numbers do not change.

NO DEFECTIONS AT SCRATCH TIME FOR KENTUCKY DERBY 141;
EL KABEIR MISSES MORNING GALLOP

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Friday, May 1, 2015) – Scratch time for the 141st Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) passed at 9 a.m. Friday with no further defections from Saturday’s field thus leaving Charles Fipke’s Tale of Verve on the outside looking in.

However, Zayat Stables’ El Kabeir’s status for Saturday’s race became clouded Friday morning when he took “a few cautious steps” that caused the cancellation of a morning gallop at Churchill Downs.

(Wednesday, April 29, 2015) – Godolphin Racing’s Wood Memorial (GI) winner Frosted and Ralph Evans’ ultra-consistent Upstart made their initial morning training appearances at Churchill Downs Wednesday. The two colts had arrived from South Florida Tuesday afternoon for Saturday’s 141st running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI).

MUBTAAHIJ GETS FIRST RUN OVER CHURCHILL DOWNS OVAL;
LONGINES KENTUCKY OAKS DRAWS FIELD OF 15

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Tuesday, April 28, 2015) – UAE (GII) winner Mubtaahij (IRE) got his first sample of the racing surface at Churchill Downs Tuesday morning, a day after arriving from Arlington. Mubtaahij jogged once around and then cantered another lap under Lisa Moncrieff.

With the Tuesday afternoon arrivals of Upstart and Frosted from South Florida and Frammento from Keeneland, all expected participants in Saturday’s $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) and those hoping to get in the race were on the grounds of the historic track.

EL KABEIR, CARPE DIEM, INTERNATIONAL STAR ARRIVE FOR DERBY 141;
LUMINANCE, MAYBELLENE LIKELY OUT OF OAKS CONSIDERATION

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Monday, April 27, 2015) – Zayat Stables’ El Kabeir and WinStar Farm and Stonestreet Stables’ Carpe Diem arrived at Churchill Downs early this morning for Saturday’s $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI). Arriving shortly after 10 o’clock from the nearby Trackside training center was Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s International Star, who took up residence in Barn 27.
