Three Carryovers on Laurel’s De Francis Program Saturday


LAUREL, MD – Laurel Park’s Fall Festival of Racing, featuring the De Francis (G3) Dash presented by Maker’s Mark, will have three carryovers.

The day kicks off with a $4,742.45 Super Hi 5 carryover in the first race, a 5 ½ furlong turf sprint featuring a full field of 12 with four on the also eligible list.

Total Handle on Maryland Million Up 18.5 Percent, Attendance Grows


Saturday Crushes 2014 Handle by 59 Percent
Track Showcases Ongoing Improvements of More than $20 Million
Day Highlighted by Admirals War Chest Victory in Classic

LAUREL, MD – Total handle on Saturday’s 31st Jim McKay Maryland Million was up 18.5 percent over 2015 and a whopping 59.8 percent over 2014.

Saturday’s program had a total handle of $4.476 million compared to $3.778 last year. Total handle in 2014 was $2.801 million.

LAUREL, MD – Sinatra Thoroughbreds Racing LLC’s Admiral’s War Chest became the fifth back-to-back winner of the $150,000 Maryland Million Classic Saturday at Laurel Park with a dominating gate-to-wire triumph in the 1 1/8-mile stakes for Maryland-sired horses.

The 5-year-old gelding won by 3 ½ lengths under Taylor Hole to join Timely Warning (1990-91), Algar (1997-98), Docent (2002-03), and Eighttofasttocatch (2011, 2013-14) as a back-to-back winner of the Maryland Million Day feature.

LAUREL, MD – Even with the vocal support of his loyal fans that welcomed him to the Laurel Park paddock and followed him to the track, popular 26-time winner Ben’s Cat couldn’t deliver a fourth Maryland Million victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Sprint.

Instead it was T D C B E Stable’s Nicaradalic Rocks, making his stakes debut, who overcame some early trouble to wrest the lead from pacesetting favorite Morning Fire in mid-stretch and go on to a one-length victory in the six-furlong dash for Maryland-sired horses 3 and older.

Phlash Phelps Defends Maryland Million Turf Title


Devilish Love Edges Complete St. in Maryland Million Ladies

LAUREL, MD – Hillwood Stable LLC’s Phlash Phelps overcame a wide trip from his outside post position to defend his title in the $125,000 Maryland Million Turf, prevailing by 1 ¼ lengths while narrowly missing a course record in the mile turf stakes for Maryland-sired horses.

Trained by Rodney Jenkins, the 3-5 favorite ran a mile over a firm Dahlia Turf Course in 1:34.57, not far off Tune of the Spirit’s 2005 record of 1:34.26. The Maryland-bred 5-year-old gelding did surpass his stakes record of 1:35.35, set while winning the 2015 Maryland Million Turf by three-quarters of a length. Victor Carrasco was aboard the son of Great Notion in both Maryland Million scores.

Pacesetter Item Withstands Double Challenge to Capture Lassie

LAUREL, MD – Kathleen Willier’s Greatbullsoffire moved to the lead on the turn into the homestretch, poised to live up to his even-money favoritism in Saturday’s $100,000 Maryland Million Nursery when 69-1 longshot Dancing With Maude swept past him to lead the way into the stretch.

Dancing With Maude opened up by more than a length in mid-stretch, but the favorite wasn’t ready to concede the six-furlong stakes for Maryland-sired 2-year-olds, finding a second wind that caught the eye of Laurel Park announcer Dave Rodman.

LAUREL, MD – Laurel Park-based jockeys Forest Boyce and Lauralea Glaser tuned up for a busy Maryland Million weekend by winning exhibition harness races in the Sulky-Cycle Challenge as part of Trotoberfest at Rosecroft Raceway.

Boyce and Glaser, along with fellow Laurel jockeys Kevin Gomez and Jevian Toledo, joined harness drivers Russell Foster, Brian Burton, Mark Gray and Jason Thompson in sulky and bicycle events between races during Thursday night’s program.

Laurel’s Opening Weekend a Success

Rainbow 6, Late Pick 5 Carryovers for Friday’s Nine-Race Program

LAUREL, MD
– The opening weekend of Laurel Park’s fall meet was a success with a 50-percent increase over last year’s opening weekend while racing an additional day.

Total handle on Laurel’s three-day opening weekend was $7 million, compared to last year’s two-day opening of $3.5 million. Laurel’s Saturday program included six stakes and $525,000 in stakes purses.
