DERBY WINNER ORB PLEASES TRAINER; SCHEDULED TO SHIP TO PIMLICO MONDAY


Goldencents Jogs over Pimlico track; Hernandez Set for First Preakness Ride

BALTIMORE, 05-09-13---Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable’s Orb pleased trainer Shug McGaughey during his morning visit to the sloppy track at Belmont Park Thursday. The Kentucky Derby (G1) winner also gave exercise rider Jenn Patterson all the right signs in his preparation for the 138th Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico on May 18.

WALKWITHAPURPOSE MAKES IT FIVE STRAIGHT


LAUREL, MD. 03-02-13---Trainer Ignacio Correas saddled Walkwithapurpose and Listen Boy in today’s $150,000 Caesar’s Wish Stakes and saw them run first and second in the one mile test for 3-year old fillies today at Laurel Park.

Both fillies are Sagamore Farm home-breds, the winner by Candy Ride (ARG), the runner-up by After Market.

JAVERRE VICTORIOUS IN GENERAL GEORGE HANDICAP


LAUREL, MD. 02-18-13---Smith Farm & Stable’s Javerre dueled front-runner Il Villano into defeat, then held on to win the $250,000 General George Handicap (G3) at Laurel Park.

The race was marred when post time favorite Brigand bore into Associate not long after the start, causing Associate to stumble and toss jockey Erick Rodriguez. Neither Rodriguez nor Associate were injured.

WIDE-OPEN FIELD FOR SATURDAY’S WIDE COUNTRY STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 02-01-13---A wide-open field of seven 3-year old fillies is expected to face starter Bruce Wagner in Saturday’s $125,000 Wide Country Stakes at Laurel Park.

Dear to All (2-1) posted the highest speed rating among the seven runners while breaking her maiden at Aqueduct on December 30. The Tale of the Cat filly, who will break from the rail in the seven furlong test on the main track, has been on the board in all three starts during her freshman campaign. Sheldon Russell will ride for Tony Dutrow.

FULL FIELD EXPECTED FOR SATURDAY’S NELLIE MORSE STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 01-24-13---Country Life Farm’s Moon Philly is the morning line favorite to win Saturday’s feature at Laurel Park, the $125,000 Nellie Morse Stakes for fillies and mares. The 1-1/16th mile test drew 12 runners. Ten can face the starter.

Trained by Mike Trombetta, Moon Philly (9-5) drew the rail. The Malibu Moon filly had a troubled trip in the Cat Cay Stakes at Aqueduct on January 6, her most recent start. After stumbling at the gate under Jeremy Rose, Moon Philly had to jump a fallen horse in the stretch but still managed to take second. Moon Philly was a model of consistency last year with eight first or second place finishes in 11 starts. Rose keeps the mount on Saturday.

PRIVATE TALE RALLIES TO WIN NATIVE DANCER STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 01-21-13---Three Diamond Farm’s Private Tale hopped at the start and was last all the way to the far turn but from there he was relentless in pursuit weaving through traffic and getting up to win the $125,000 Native Dancer Stakes.

Mike Trombetta trains Private Tale, a five year old son of Tale of the Cat, who completed the 1-1/16th mile distance in 1:45.85. Frontrunner Javerre held on to take second while Adirondack King loomed large in the stretch but had to settle for third.
Sheldon Russell was aboard Private Tale for the first time.

MONDAY’S CARD HIGHLIGHTED BY A PAIR OF STAKES RACES


LAUREL, MD. 01-18-13---Holiday race fans will be treated to two competitive stakes on Monday afternoon, the $125,000 Fire Plug and the $125,000 Native Dancer, scheduled to go as the sixth and eighth races on the nine race program.

Nine older runners are entered in the 1-1/16th mile Native Dancer. The race is sponsored by Sagamore Racing, which was the home of Native Dancer. During his Hall of Fame career, the Grey Ghost went 21 for 22, winning both the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in 1953. Upon his retirement from racing, Native Dancer entered stud at Sagamore Farm, where he sired 45 stakes winners. He passed away in 1967 and is buried at Sagamore.

TEN 3 YEAR-OLDS EXPECTED IN SATURDAY’S FRANK WHITELEY STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 01-17-12---Hope spring eternal for 10 budding three-year olds in Saturday’s seven furlong, $125,000 Frank Whiteley, Jr. Stakes at Laurel Park.

Graham Motion trains Heat Press (3-1), who broke his maiden by 14 widening lengths in his most recent start at Laurel on December 8 to earn an 83 Beyer speed figure. The Malibu Moon colt has worked three times at the Fair Hill Training Center since that score and regains the services of Jeremy Rose, who was aboard for his maiden debut.

IL VILLANO ROMPS IN DAVE’S FRIEND STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 12-29-12---Chuck Russo’s Il Villano had it all his own way in the six-furlong, $100,000 Dave’s Friend Stakes, the co-feature this afternoon at Laurel Park.

Sent out to spar for the lead under Kendrick Carmouche for trainer Susan Crowell, the 3-year-old quickly emerged with the lead and went on to beat five of his elders by three lengths in 1:11.20 over the sloppy going. Immortal Eyes nipped Wolfcamp to finish second.

Onepointhreekarats Draws Off To Win Thirty Eight Go Go Stakes


LAUREL, MD. 12-22-12---Live Oak Plantation’s Onepointhreekarats carried Jeremy Rose to a convincing victory in today’s feature race at Laurel Park, the $104,250 Thirty Eight Go Go Stakes.

Graham Motion trains the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro at the Fair Hill Training Center in Northeast, Maryland. The filly came into the Thirty Eight Go Go off a 4-1/2 length victory in her first try over this strip in early November at today’s one mile distance. This was her first stakes attempt and her first stakes victory.

Winning Image Is An Easy Winner Of The Willa On The Move Stakes


LAUREL, MD. 12-15-12---Martin Scafidi’s Winning Image left no doubt about her intentions when she shot to the lead in the $100,000 Willa on the Move Stakes. A minute and eleven seconds later she had proven she was the best of six fillies and mares in Saturday’s feature at Laurel Park.

Jose Caraballo pushed the buttons on the five-year-old daughter of Southern Image, who was geared down nearing the finish line to win by a length and a quarter over late rallying longshot Withgreatpleasure. Made to Love Her took third.

MARYLAND THOROUGHBRED RACING UNITES WITH 10-YEAR AGREEMENT


LAUREL, MD. 12-14-12---The Maryland Jockey Club (MJC), the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (MTHA) and the Maryland Horse Breeders Association (MHBA) today announced that they have come to a 10-year agreement for sustained racing at Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park.

“I am confident and pleased via this agreement,” said Stronach Group chairman Frank Stronach, who owns Pimlico and Laurel, "we will now have long term stability, year round racing and stabling, an attractive purse structure, promise for the breeding industry and a strong foundation to restore Maryland racing to its pre-eminence in North American racing."
