Nicaradalic Rocks Pulls Upset in $100,000 Maryland Million Sprint

Popular Multiple Stakes Winner Ben’s Cat Runs Last For Fifth Straight Loss

LAUREL, MD – Even with the vocal support of his loyal fans that welcomed him to the Laurel Park paddock and followed him to the track, popular 26-time winner Ben’s Cat couldn’t deliver a fourth Maryland Million victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Sprint.

Instead it was T D C B E Stable’s Nicaradalic Rocks, making his stakes debut, who overcame some early trouble to wrest the lead from pacesetting favorite Morning Fire in mid-stretch and go on to a one-length victory in the six-furlong dash for Maryland-sired horses 3 and older.

Phlash Phelps Defends Maryland Million Turf Title

Devilish Love Edges Complete St. in Maryland Million Ladies

LAUREL, MD – Hillwood Stable LLC’s Phlash Phelps overcame a wide trip from his outside post position to defend his title in the $125,000 Maryland Million Turf, prevailing by 1 ¼ lengths while narrowly missing a course record in the mile turf stakes for Maryland-sired horses.

Trained by Rodney Jenkins, the 3-5 favorite ran a mile over a firm Dahlia Turf Course in 1:34.57, not far off Tune of the Spirit’s 2005 record of 1:34.26. The Maryland-bred 5-year-old gelding did surpass his stakes record of 1:35.35, set while winning the 2015 Maryland Million Turf by three-quarters of a length. Victor Carrasco was aboard the son of Great Notion in both Maryland Million scores.

Dancing With Maude opened up by more than a length in mid-stretch, but the favorite wasn’t ready to concede the six-furlong stakes for Maryland-sired 2-year-olds, finding a second wind that caught the eye of Laurel Park announcer Dave Rodman.
