BRIGAND WINS CITY OF LAUREL STAKES FOR BAFFERT


LAUREL, MD. 12-08-12---This afternoon Bob Baffert sent a runner to Laurel Park for the first time in his career and his colt Brigand returned the favor with a front-running victory in the $104,000 City of Laurel Stakes.

BIG-NAME TRAINERS SHIP IN FOR CITY OF LAUREL STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 12-06-12---Two New York shippers are among the favorites to win the $100,000 City Of Laurel Stakes for three-year-olds on Saturday at Laurel Park. The seven-furlong test drew eight runners.

Trainer Chad Brown is sending stakes winner Hardened Wildcat from his Belmont Park base. Bob Baffert counters with Brigand, a tested member of his New York string.

JENNINGS HANDICAP, MARYLANDER STAKES TOP SATURDAY’S CARD

AWARD WINNING RACING JOURNALIST AND HISTORIAN JOE KELLY PASSES


BALTIMORE, 11-27-12---The Maryland racing community lost one of its most prominent members when award-winning journalist and racing historian Joseph B. Kelly passed away Monday at Stella Maris Rehabilitation and Hospice after a short battle with cancer. He was 94 years old.

A lifelong resident of Baltimore, Joe Kelly covered horse racing for nearly 70 years.

SHE’S ALL SCAT RE-RALLIES TO TAKE GIN TALKING STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 11-24-12---Barry & Joni Butzow’s She’s All Scat led to the furlong marker, lost the lead for a few strides before fighting back to win in the $100,000 Gin Talking Stakes for 2-year-old fillies on Saturday afternoon at Laurel Park.

TEN FILLIES LINE UP FOR SATURDAY’S GIN TALKING STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 11-23-12---The Dutrow brothers grew up in Maryland and Saturday afternoon Tony and Rick will ship the likely favorites into Laurel Park for the $100,000 Gin Talking Stakes. The 7-furlong test drew ten 2-year-old fillies.

Tony Dutrow sends Disco Barbie, the 5-2 morning line favorite, down to central Maryland from Parx Racing. The daughter of Pure Prize has shown a strong finishing punch in all three of her starts including a maiden win and a third place finish in the Xtra Heat Stakes at Delaware Park in which she was boxed out but then five wide and gaining at the finish. Sheldon Russell has the riding assignment.

BOLD AFFAIR GOES COAST TO COAST IN GEISHA STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 11-22-12---Charles Reed & Mike Zanella’s Bold Affair went to the lead, galloped along within herself and came home a driving winner in the Thanksgiving day feature at Laurel Park, the $100,000 Geisha Stakes.
Racing one mile under Abel Castellano, Bold Affair completed the distance in 1:38.81 over the fast main track and finished four lengths ahead of Catch a Thief, who had to chase the winner throughout. Plum rallied for third.

BOLD AFFAIR LOOMS ABOVE STAKES WINNERS IN THURSDAY’S GEISHA STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 11-21-12---Thanksgiving traditions: turkey dinner, NFL games and thoroughbred racing at Laurel Park. The central Maryland track offers a special 11:05 a.m. post time Thursday with a nine-race card, highlighted by the $100,000 Geisha Stakes for Maryland-bred fillies and mares.

All seven runners in the one mile Geisha have stakes victories on their resumes, including even money favorite Bold Affair. The daughter of Two Punch comes into the Geisha off a dominating 13-1/4 length victory in the Maryland Million Distaff Handicap, her fourth stakes score of the year. Earlier this year, the Howard Wolfendale trainee took the Conniver, Primonetta and Skipat Stakes. Abel Castellano will be aboard for the ninth straight race.

GREED AND FEAR STALKS AND SCORES IN SAFELY KEPT STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 11-17-12---Michael Dubb’s Greed and Fear took the overland route to victory in Saturday’s feature at Laurel Park, the $100,000 Safely Kept Stakes for three-year-old fillies.

Sent to post at 4-1 under Horacio Karamanos for trainer Rudy Rodriguez, the Bob and John filly broke from the outside post in the field of nine, travelled four wide down the backstretch, then swept up and around on the leaders around the turn and drew off in the stretch to an impressive, 1-1/4 length score in 1:25.13 for the seven furlong distance.

NINE FILLIES SET TO FACE THE STARTER IN SATURDAY’S SAFELY KEPT STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 11-15-12---Nine 3-year-old fillies will sprint seven furlongs in the $100,000 Safely Kept Stakes at Laurel Park Saturday afternoon.

Daniel Smithwick has won four races with Holiday Soiree, the tepid 5-2 morning line favorite. The daughter of Harlan’s Holiday’s resume includes two unplaced finishes in graded stakes this year and a willing second in the $400,000 Charles Town Oaks. Sheldon Russell gets his first try aboard the filly, who posted a bullet work at the Churchill Downs Training Track before shipping to Maryland.

WHISKEY ROMEO “IMPRESSIVE” IN JAMES LEWIS STAKES VICTORY


LAUREL, MD. 11-10-12---The gate opened, Whiskey Romeo shot to the lead and essentially, the inaugural running of the $125,000 James F. Lewis III Stakes at Laurel Park was over.

Cruising under the finish line in 1:11.70 for the six furlong distance on the fast main track, the Tony Dutrow trainee was being gently geared down under jockey Stewart Elliott as he beat Amerigo Vespucci by 7-1/2 lengths, with Alpha Mike Foxtrot another 1-3/4 lengths back in third.

SIX 2-YEAR-OLDS ENTERED IN SATURDAY’S JAMES LEWIS STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 11-08-12---Tony Dutrow has started Whiskey Romeo only once but the maiden win was so impressive it has earned him the role as favorite in Saturday’s $125,000 James F. Lewis III Stakes for 2-year-olds at Laurel Park.

The Forestry offspring opened a long lead against five others in his debut before cruising home to a 78 Beyer speed figure on Sept. 29 at Parx Racing and is listed as the overwhelming 6-5 program choice in the 6-furlong test. Dutrow has worked Whiskey Romeo three times since the maiden win, including a half-mile bullet drill in 48 seconds on Nov. 4. Stewart Elliott will accompany the bay colt on his trip to Maryland.
