LIGHTHOUSE BAY NIPS 64-1 SHOT IN SMART HALO STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 11-03-12---Lighthouse Bay sat off the dueling leaders and then edged a 64-1 shot by a nose to win the $100,000 Smart Halo Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Laurel Park Saturday afternoon.

Jockey Kendrick Carmouche was content on sitting behind front runners Baby J and Jax and Jill before gaining the lead in upper stretch. By midstretch Laurel Park-based Ek Haseena challenged Lighthouse Bay and the two bumped and brushed several times in the final furlong before the winner put a nose in front at the wire.

JAX AND JILL LOOKS TO REMAIN UNBEATEN IN SMART HALO


LAUREL, MD. 11-01-12---Robert Cole’s Jax and Jill looks to remain unbeaten in Saturday’s $125,000 Smart Halo Stakes at Laurel Park. The 6-furlong test features eight 2-year-old fillies.

Trained by Scott Lake, Jax and Jill has gone unchallenged in four starts, winning by a combined 25-3/4 lengths in victories at Parx Racing, Timonium and a pair of state-bred stakes at Charles Town.

TROMBETTA TO SADDLE TWO BREEDERS’ CUP STARTERS


LAUREL, MD. 10-31-12---Trainer Mike Trombetta became a major player during the 2006 Triple Crown scene with Laurel Park-based Sweetnorthernsaint, the betting favorite in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and runner-up finisher in the Preakness Stakes (G1). On Saturday afternoon, he fulfills another goal by saddling two runners on the Breeders’ Cup card at Santa Anita Park.

Next Question was an automatic qualifier in the $1 million Turf Sprint (G1) by winning the Nearctic Stakes (G1) at Woodbine earlier this month. The son of Stormy Atlantic is 10-1 on the morning line.

ACTION ANDY NIPS IL VILLANO IN THE FRANK J. DE FRANCIS MEMORIAL DASH


LAUREL, MD. 10-27-12---Robert Gerczak’s Action Andy rallied strongly and just made it to the wire in time in a thrilling finish with Il Villano, winning out by a whisker in a photo finish to take the $350,000 Frank J. DeFrancis Memorial Dash, the feature on the Fall Festival of Racing program.

While making it two straight victories after prevailing in the Maryland Million Sprint Handicap three weeks earlier, Action Andy officially won by a nose under Horacio Karamanos while running six furlongs in 1:10.61 .

DANNHAUSER HOLDS OFF THE CLOSERS IN LAUREL TURF CUP SCORE


LAUREL, MD. 10-27-12---Prince Farm LLC’s Dannhauser benefitted from a ground-saving ride by Laurel’s leading rider, Sheldon Russell, and held off a slew of closers to prevail by a neck in the $150,000 Laurel Turf Cup.

Always to the inside and within range, the 4-year-old colt surged to command inside the field leaving the eighth pole, opened a clear advantage soon after that and was extended to best See Tobe and Manchurian High.

JAZZY IDEA UPSETS BEN’S CAT IN THE LAUREL DASH


LAUREL, MD. 10-27-12---Edwin W. Merryman’s Jazzy Idea, the only filly in the field, broke her own course record over six furlongs on the turf to capture the $150,000 Laurel Dash for three-year-olds and up by ¾ of a length over defending champion Ben’s Cat.

Ridden by Elvis Trujillo, Jazzy Idea bested eight males while running the distance in 1:07.29 to beat the mark of 1:07.45 she established on the meet’s opening day while winning the Jameela Stakes.

SILVER SCREAMER GETS UP IN TIME IN LADY BALTIMORE STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 10-27-12---Michael Imperio & Donald W. Olson’s Silver Screamer showed that the Cozzene bloodline remains formidable on the turf as she galloped to victory in the $150,000 Lady Baltimore Stakes, one of six stakes on the Fall Festival of Racing card at Laurel Park.

Away alertly and on the hunt of frontrunner Laughing from her outside post, Silver Screamer carried Jose Espinoza over the 1-1/16 mile distance in 1:40.63 across the firm turf, winning by a neck. Laughing held on to finish second, narrowly edging out Federation (GB), who was another neck behind at the wire.

TATE’S LANDING POUNCES IN THE LAUREL FUTURITY


LAUREL, MD. 10-27-12---Copper Penny Stables’ Tate’s Landing, who is based at Delaware Park, made his first trip to Laurel Park a winning one when he sat off the pace before charging up to win the $150,000 Laurel Futurity for 2-year-olds, one of six stakes races on the Fall Festival of Racing card.

Under Alex Cintron for trainer Mike Pino, the son of Orientate completed the 5-1/2 furlong distance over the firm turf in 1:02.08 and won by three and a quarter lengths over Star Maneuver, who rallied down the lane just outside the winner. Lunar Rock finished third.

MYSTIC LOVE RALLIES TO WIN SELIMA STAKES


LAUREL, MD. 10-27-12---John Davison’s Mystic Love broke next to last, gradually settled into stride, then accelerated around the far turn and swept past the field of 2-year old fillies to be up in time to win the $150,000 Selima Stakes, the first of six stakes on the Fall Festival of Racing card at Laurel Park.

Contested at 5 ½ furlongs over the firm turf, the Selima attracted twelve starters including the dark bay daughter of Not For Love, who carried Elvis Trujillo to victory in 1:02.23.

DOMINGUEZ RETURNS TO THE SCENE OF HIS FIRST GRADE 1 SCORE


LAUREL, MD. 10-26-12---Before Ramon Dominguez became a two-time Eclipse Award winning jockey, he was the top rider in the mid-Atlantic in search of a Grade 1 victory. Dominguez earned his first in the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash aboard A Huevo on November 15, 2003 at Laurel Park.

“I remember it well,” Dominguez said Thursday morning from New York. “The horse was sitting back and then made a run on the outside. I was able to win the race and he won pretty handy (by 1-3/4 lengths). It was extremely exciting for me. Michael Dickinson was the trainer and he was somebody who was putting me on a lot of good horses. I was riding Tapit and Soto for him at the time.”

BEN’S CAT LOOKING TO REPEAT IN LAUREL DASH


LAUREL, MD. 10-25-12---While the $350,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash headlines Saturday’s 11-race Fall Festival of Racing card at Laurel Park, the star of the program is the remarkable Ben’s Cat, who is looking to defend his title in the $150,000 Laurel Dash, one of five turf stakes on the undercard.

Maryland Jockey Club handicapper Frank Carulli has established the King Leatherbury homebred as the even money favorite in the 6-furlong turf test. Three weeks ago, he became the fourth horse to win the same Maryland Million race three consecutive years with a victory in the Turf Sprint. The son of Parker’s Storm Cat became Leatherbury’s first millionaire with a victory in the Turf Monster Handicap (G3) at Parx Racing in early September. He has won 18-of-27 starts with 13 stakes scores for earnings of $1,216,090.

ELEVEN SPRINTERS ENTERED IN FRANK. J. DE FRANCIS MEMORIAL DASH


LAUREL, MD. 10-24-12---Eleven sprinters have been entered in Saturday’s 21st running of the $350,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash at Laurel Park. Post time for the 11-race card will be 12:35 p.m. Eastern. The De Francis Dash is the 10th race on the program with a post time of 5:14 p.m. The first 4,000 fans in attendance receive a complimentary Laurel Park sports cap.

The Fall Festival of Racing card also features five $150,000 stakes races on the turf: the Laurel Futurity for 2-year-olds, the Selima Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, the 6-furlong Laurel Dash, the Lady Baltimore Stakes for fillies and mares and the 1-1/2 mile Laurel Turf Cup. The six stakes races on the program garnered 82 entries.
