Cracking Purebred action tops the card


Nad Al Sheba’s fifth meeting of the current campaign, kindly sponsored by BBC World is a six-race card, with two worth AED110,000 each during the evening.

The first of these is the opening 1600m Al Barsha Plate, a Purebred Arabian conditions contest which has attracted a field of 11 including Paris Gagner, representing Champion Trainer Doug Watson.

Sporting the colours of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the five-year-old proved himself a genuine Group 1 performer last season but this trip would be very much his minimum.

BBC World sponsors Thursday’s race meeting


The Dubai Racing Club is proud to announce this Thursday’s race card is kindly sponsored by BBC World, the global news and television channel.

Dubai Racing Club CEO Mr Frank Gabriel Jr said: “This week sees the Winter Racing Challenge reach its half way mark.

“So far, we have enjoyed a very positive start to the season, with many horses announcing themselves as contenders for the Winter Racing Challenge Finals held on January 1, 2009.

BurJuman Ladies Night a hit


It was all about the ladies once again as Dubai Racing Club played host to the popular BurJuman Ladies Night.

Beautifully decorated suites in the Maktoum Grandstand opened their doors once again to welcome ladies dressed in their racing finest.

Whilst the thundering action on the track took place, guests enjoyed the stylish fashion displays, courtesy of BurJuman, whilst sampling the sparkling beverages and gourmet canapés in the delightful pink and white-themed suites.

Perfect start for Mubarak Bin Shafya


Local apprentice Ahmed Ajtebi was in the saddle when trainer Mubarak Bin Shafya made a great start to his UAE campaign with Dubai Twilight running out the facile winner of the concluding 2000m handicap.

Beaming from ear-to-ear, Ajtebi said: “It’s great to have a winner for the team.

“I need five more to lose my apprentice claim and things are going really well.”

Watson looks trainer to follow


Champion Trainer Doug Watson appears to hold a strong hand at Thursday’s fourth Nad Al Sheba meeting of the season, kindly sponsored by Gulf News.

With over AED100,000 available to racegoers courtesy of the free-to-enter tipping competitions, Watson’s runners appear certain to figure prominently among Pick Six contestants.

The American saddles two in the opening 1800m Purebred Arabian GNB Stakes, with his classy Nirwan heading the weights and stable companion Wayne Rooney providing an interesting second option.

High Power Horse Power


Trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe enjoyed a lucrative evening at Nad Al Sheba’s third meeting of the season when saddling half of the six winners on the Al Tayer Motors-sponsored card.

Stable jockey Royston Ffrench was in the saddle in the concluding 1600m handicap in which Rochdale battled to victory.

The five-year-old led close home to complete the jockey’s double and a trio for the trainer.
