Trainer Harty’s life keeps returning to Dubai

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - If life is a circle, as the saying goes in many cultures, then the professional life of trainer Eoin Harty keeps coming back around to Dubai.

Previously an assistant to American Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, Harty’s current life in racing began when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson telephoned him one day in 1999.

O’Callaghan Hopes to Dance to Dubai Golden Shaheen Repeat

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - One of the most lasting images of the 2010 Dubai World Cup card was trainer Carl O'Callaghan's “Irish Jig” in the parade ring as his charge Kinsale King reported home victorious in the US$2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen, sponsored by Gulf News, and the affable Irish-born but California-based trainer is back with his star sprinter in a repeat bid in the 1200m dash on the Meydan Racecourse All-Weather surface.

The victory by the son of Yankee Victor as well as the dance from the gelding's trainer put both horse and conditioner on the international stage.

Midge Exciting Meehan at Meydan

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - David Junior whetted Brian Meehan’s appetite for victory in Dubai when winning at Nad Al Sheba five years ago and the Manton maestro is back for more with a pair of runners carrying his hopes on Dubai World Cup night at Meydan.

Mantoba goes in the UAE Derby after running down the field at the Breeders’ Cup last November but it is Dangerous Midge who is really exciting the trainer.

Dubai World Cup Preview – Thursday March 24

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - This year's sixteenth running of the US$10million Dubai World Cup promises to be the best yet with a stellar cast of 14 declared for the world's richest horse race, as always generously sponsored by Emirates Airline.

Henry Cecil trains Twice Over who was the impressive winner of the Al Maktoum Challenge Round III on Super Thursday on the Meydan All-Weather. That race, over the same 2000m course and distance as the Dubai World Cup, has proved a very reliable guide to the World Cup itself with Electrocutionist, Street Cry and, probably most importantly Dubai Millennium winning it en route to Dubai World Cup glory.

Dubai Duty Free Preview – Thursday March 24

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - Always one of the highlights of the Dubai World Cup card, the 1800m Group One Dubai Duty Free certainly appears a cracking renewal in 2011 and a race fit to grace any turf track in the world.

Bankable was second in this race last year for Herman Brown and has just had three starts since, all at the Dubai International Racing Carnival. He was a very impressive winner on Super Thursday in the Group Three Mahab Al Shimaal as he demonstrated his class and versatility – that race was over 1200m on All-Weather!

Dubai Golden Shaheen Preview – Thursday March 24

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - The smallest field of the night but a fascinating race featuring a clash between Kinsale King and Rocket Man who were first and second last year when the 1200m contest was run on the All-Weather for the first time.

It would not be a surprise were they to fight out the finish again and Kinsale King, trained by the colourful Carl O'Callaghan may struggle to confirm the form with Patrick Shaw's top-class sprinter.

Dubai Sheema Classic Preview – Thursday March 24

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - With the defection of Snow Fairy this 2400m Group One turf feature really does look wide open and, even in her absence, the UK do appear to have a very strong challenge.

On form Laaheb has a lot to find but he is a first ever runner for trainer Roger Varian and racing does have a habit of providing fairytales. Varian has taken over the license from veteran training legend Michael Jarvis and what better way to start his career than with a Dubai World Cup night winner in front of a worldwide audience. However, he does need to improve markedly on what he has achieved thus far but he represents a family that has always progressed with their racing.

Dubai Godolphin Mile Preview – Thursday March 24

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - This looks a quality renewal and a very competitive running of the Godolphin Mile, on All-Weather and which, as the name suggests, is over 1600m. Barry Hills trains Red Jazz who improved dramatically throughout last year which culminated in a Group Two victory at Newmarket having previously finished a close third to Dubai World Cup hopeful Poet's Voice in Group One company.

The surface has to be a query but he is a young, progressive horse and the highest-rated in the field.

Al Quoz Sprint Preview – Thursday March 24

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - Added to the Dubai World Cup card last year, this turf race has been reduced from the traditional 1200m to 1000m this year and upgraded to Group Two status.

The maximum of 16 will face the starter but it may not be as competitive as the numbers suggest; the 2009 winner JJ The Jet Plane is a genuine Group One performer who will be very hard to beat, despite dropping to the minimum trip for only the third time.

Dubai Kahayla Classic Preview – Thursday March 24

Dubai, UAE, March 24, 2011 - The traditional curtain-raiser to the Dubai World Cup card, the Dubai Kahayla Classic, over the same 2000m All-Weather course as the Dubai World Cup itself, looks exceptionally wide open this year.

The recognised prep, Super Thursday's concluding round of the Al Maktoum Challenge, was won by Nieshan for Abu Dhabi-based handler Eric Lemartinel.

Track Notes – March 24, 2011

Group One US$10 million Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates Airline

Buena Vista – Hiroshi Matsuda, trainer of Buena Vista, said: “We do not change our training schedule even when we are in foreign country, so she put in a routine canter today. The climate and the surroundings in the stable area are very good, which is good for her. About draw no. 13, she is a type of horse who does not start well, so it does not matter. Actually my grandson said to me on the other day that Buena Vista has won twice from stall No. 13.
