KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER MINE THAT BIRD’S PREAKNESS STATUS TO BE DECIDED IN THE NEXT TWO DAYS


BALTIMORE, 05-03-09---The eyes of the racing world shift from Churchill Downs to Pimlico Race Course as the Triple Crown players set their sights on Baltimore for the 134th running of the Preakness® Stakes on May 16.

This morning trainer Bennie “Chip” Woolley Jr. informed a Maryland Jockey Club official that a decision on Mine That Bird, the stunning 50-1 winner of yesterday’s Kentucky Derby, will be made in a day or two.

ZITO TRAINED MINER’S ESCAPE GALLOPS IN TESIO STAKES


BALTIMORE, 05-02-09---Trainer Nick Zito has saddled 19 Preakness® Stakes runners during his Hall of Fame career, including 1996 winner Louis Quatorze, with at least one starter in Maryland’s signature race in 15 of the previous 18 years. This afternoon at Pimlico Race Course, the Zito trained Miner’s Escape came home an impressive winner in the $75,000 Federico Tesio Stakes.

The Tesio has been used as a springboard to the Preakness by standouts such as Deputed Testamony (1983), Oliver’s Twist (1995) and Magic Weisner (2002). The 134th running of the middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown is set for Saturday, May 16.

Baltimore Native Wins Her First Race


BALTIMORE, MD. 5-1-09---Apprentice Jennifer Jennings notched her first lifetime win in today’s sixth race at Pimlico when her mount led from start to finish.

PTK LLC’s Plagiarize outkicked $5,000 claimers straight from the gate and Jennings spent most of her winning ride looking back for competition. The Allen’s Prospect offspring won by 7-1/2 lengths and paid $9.20.

Eight Set To Go In Federico Tesio Stakes


BALTIMORE, MD. 4-30-09---The $75,000 Federico Tesio Stakes highlights Saturday’s Kentucky Derby day celebration at Pimlico. The Tesio, often used as a prep for the Preakness Stakes, has attracted eight 3-year-olds who will race nine furlongs on the main track.

Saturday’s eleven race card has a special first post of 12:45 p.m. The Kentucky Derby will be simulcast to Pimlico at 6:24 p.m.

MARYLANDERS INVADING LOUISVILLE FOR DERBY WEEK


BALTIMORE, 04-29-09---Maryland trainers have targeted two graded stakes during Kentucky Derby week at Churchill Downs.

Co-owner and trainer John Salzman, Jr. is sending his exciting 2-year-old filly Gator Prowl up against four colts and four fillies in the $100,000 Kentucky Juvenile Stakes (GIII). The five furlong test goes as race nine on Thursday. Gator Prowl won her debut by 11-1/2 lengths at Laurel Park on April 9 under Jonathan Joyce, breaking a 45-year-old track record for the 4-1/2 furlong distance. Joyce will be back at the controls.

MARYLAND RACING COMMISSION WITHDRAWS THOROUGHBRED SIGNALS FROM ROSECROFT RACEWAY


BALTIMORE, 04-28-09---At its monthly meeting this afternoon at Pimlico Race Course, the Maryland Racing Commission voted to withdraw approval of Rosecroft Raceway to import thoroughbred signals, effective midnight, April 29.

The Prince George’s County (MD) harness track owes the Maryland thoroughbred industry $2 million since January 1 and indicated at today’s meeting that it is has no intention to compensate the Maryland Jockey Club (MJC), Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (MTHA) and Maryland Horse Breeders Association (MBHA).

HRTV, ESPN360.COM TO BROADCAST PREAKNESS WEEK EVENTS


BALTIMORE, 04-27-09---Horse Racing Television (HRTV) and ESPN will team up to provide 10 and half hours shoulder programming on-air and online during Preakness week. The headline event of the week is the 134th running of the $1 million Preakness® Stakes (Grade I), the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, on May 16, but the week also features the Preakness post position draw and 15 other stakes races.

HRTV, a cable and satellite channel dedicated to horse racing with access to over 70 tracks, will simulcast the events on ESPN360.com for exclusive live online coverage in the US. ESPN360.com is ESPN's broadband sports network that gives fans a 24/7 online destination delivering more than 3,500 live global sports events annually. BRICKELL UPSETS THE FIELD IN HENRY CLARK STAKES


BALTIMORE, 04-25-09---Harry Kassap LLC’s Brickell scored a 50-1 upset in today’s feature, the $75,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes contested over the good turf at Pimlico Race Course. The 8-year-old was the longest shot on the board in the 11 horse field for older horses.

The son of Deputy Minister, making his 52nd lifetime start, tracked the pacesetters from third in his position along the hedge, then edged to the fore as the field straightened for home. Under jockey Harry Vega, Brickell completed the one mile distance in 1:39.80, beating late closing Independent George by 1-1/4 lengths. Midwatch, the pacesetter, finished third.

BALTIMORE NATIVE STACY KEIBLER TO BE CELEBRITY HOST FOR PREAKNESS INFIELDFEST


BALTIMORE, 04-24-09—The Maryland Jockey Club announced today that actress and Baltimore native Stacy Keibler has been named the official “celebrity host” of Preakness InfieldFEST, presented by Bud Light, at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Plans for Preakness InfieldFEST were unveiled February 5. The day will feature a concert with three rock performances, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers ZZ Top, Grammy-nominated Buckcherry and Maryland’s #1 Rock Band, Charm City Devils, along with a pro beach volleyball tournament and an interactive experience, including virtual NASCAR racing, prior to the running of the $1 million Preakness.

HENRY CLARK STAKES TOPS SATURDAY CARD


BALTIMORE, 04-23-09----The $75,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes has attracted a competitive band of eleven older runners who will race a mile on the turf on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.

The morning line choice is Independent George (9-5), who has won four times on the grass and raced several times against Grade I company. Trained by Graham Motion, the son of Cozzene last appeared in August at Woodbine and finished a battling fifth in the Grade II Nijinsky. Kendrick Carmouche picks up the mount.

MJC ANNOUNCES 2009 ALIBI BREAKFAST AWARD WINNERS


BALTIMORE, 04-22-09--The Maryland Jockey Club today announced the winners of this year’s Preakness media awards. Honorees will be recognized and awards presented at the May 14 Alibi Breakfast in the Terrace Dining Room at Pimlico Race Course. The ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. two days prior to the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, the $1 million Preakness® Stakes (Grade I).

USA Today’s Tom Pedulla is the recipient of the David F. Woods Award for his emotional feature on the family of Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux. The Woods Award honors the best Preakness story for the previous year. Judging was done by Preakness notes team members Ed Gray, Mike Kane and Matt Graves, all award winning turf writers.

PIMLICO LAUNCHES NEW AND IMPROVED PREAKNESS WEBSITE


BALTIMORE, 04-21-09---Pimlico Race Course today launched a new and improved website for the 2009 Preakness® Stakes, the middle jewel of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. The redesigned http://www.preakness.com site will feature unparalleled coverage of the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes at the historic Baltimore track on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

“The people spoke and we listened,” said Kerry Carlson, Vice President of Marketing for Magna Entertainment Corp (MEC)., Pimlico’s parent company. “Over the last few months we’ve been working hard to bring a whole new Preakness experience to the web. Overall, our updates have focused on providing fans with more functionality and more information and organizing it all in an easily digestible manner.”
