36TH ANNUAL PREAKNESS PARADE AND OTHER DOWNTOWN EVENTS SPICE UP PREAKNESS WEEK CELEBRATION


BALTIMORE, 05-08-09---The 2009 Preakness Parade of Lights will be held on Friday, May 15, at 8:30 p.m. This year the parade will feature illuminated floats, bands, giant balloons, equestrian units and the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales. The 2009 Grand Marshal is Baltimore’s own Stacy Keibler, who the next day at Pimlico Race Course will be the celebrity host of the InfieldFEST, presented by Bud Light, at the 134th Preakness® Stakes.

The Preakness parade steps-off on Pratt Street and Eutaw Street and continues east on Pratt Street to Market Place. Spectators can catch the best views of the parade near the reviewing stand located on the northwest corner of Pratt and Light streets.

THE PREAKNESS FIELD CONTINUES TO TAKE SHAPE NINE DAYS BEFORE THE MIDDLE JEWEL


BALTIMORE, 05-07-09---The story continues to develop as the field for the 134th Preakness® Stakes continues to take shape. The $1 million classic is the headline event of a 13-race card at historic Pimlico Race Course next Saturday, May 16.

Trainer Larry Jones said he will ship Friesan Fire, the Kentucky Derby favorite, to Pimlico Monday, May 11 with plans to work the Louisiana Derby (Grade II) winner five-furlongs at Old Hilltop on Tuesday morning then decide if the son of A.P. Indy will run in the Preakness. The colt suffered cuts in his left front foot while getting bumped shortly after the start of the “Run for the Roses”.

PREAKNESS INFIELDFEST FEATURES THREE ROCK N ROLL PERFORMANCES


BALTIMORE, 05-07-09—The Maryland Jockey Club announced today the final roll call of events for Preakness InfieldFEST, presented by Bud Light, at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Plans for the Bud Light InfieldFEST were unveiled February 5. The day will feature a main stage concert with three rock performances, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers ZZ Top, Grammy-nominated Buckcherry and Maryland’s #1 Rock Band, Charm City Devils, along with The Toyota Pro Beach East Women’s Volleyball Tournament and an interactive competition including virtual NASCAR racing, where fans can win over $10,000 in prize money .

Preakness News-May 6-2009


BALTIMORE, 05-06-09---The prospective field for next Saturday’s 134th Preakness® Stakes grew by three confirmed starters when the connections of Musket Man, General Quarters and Terrain committed to the middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown. The $1 million race now has nine definite starters with Big Drama the first to arrive at historic Pimlico Race Course.

Trainer Derek Ryan told Maryland Jockey Club officials that Musket Man, who finished third in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby would be Preakness bound. The Illinois Derby (Grade II) and Tampa Bay Derby (Grade III) winner has never finished off the board in seven lifetime starts.

FIVE-TIME WINNER D. WAYNE LUKAS WILL RETURN WITH HIS 33RD PREAKNESS STARTER

BALTIMORE, 05-05-09---Only Robert Wyndham Walden, who trained seven Preakness winners, including five straight from 1878-1882 has hoisted the Woodlawn Vase more times than D. Wayne Lukas, who has won five middle jewels. The Hall of Famer will attempt for his sixth victory in the 134th Preakness® Stakes on May 16 with Flying Private.

Flying Private, who finished second in the Grade II Lane’s End Stakes in March, finished last in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. The Equibase chart indicated the son of Fusaichi Pegasus was five wide into the first turn and within striking distance but faded after five furlongs.

DERBY TRIAL WINNER HULL ADDED TO PREAKNESS LINEUP


BALTIMORE, 05-04-09---Unbeaten Derby Trial (Grade III) winner Hull has been added to the lineup for the 134th running of the Preakness® Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on May 16.

The son of Holy Bull is a perfect three-for-three this year, breaking his maiden first time out at the Fair Grounds on February 7 then defeating allowance company at Turfway Park on April 2 before his Derby Trial victory at Churchill Downs on April 25.

KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER MINE THAT BIRD IS PREAKNESS BOUND


BALTIMORE, 05-04-09---Trainer Bennie “Chip” Woolley Jr. informed Maryland Jockey Club officials that Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird will run in the $1 million Preakness® Stakes at historic Pimlico Race Course on May 16. The surprise winner of Saturday’s “Run for the Roses” will leave Louisville next Monday or Tuesday morning by van and upon arrival will be stabled in Stall 40, reserved for the Kentucky Derby winner, in the Pimlico stakes barn.

“It is good for the sport,” Woolley said. “You cannot have a Triple Crown winner without having the Derby winner in the Preakness. That played into our decision but the horse looks super. I have never been to Baltimore, but it looks like I won’t be able to say that in a few days.”

KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER MINE THAT BIRD’S PREAKNESS STATUS TO BE DECIDED IN THE NEXT TWO DAYS


BALTIMORE, 05-03-09---The eyes of the racing world shift from Churchill Downs to Pimlico Race Course as the Triple Crown players set their sights on Baltimore for the 134th running of the Preakness® Stakes on May 16.

This morning trainer Bennie “Chip” Woolley Jr. informed a Maryland Jockey Club official that a decision on Mine That Bird, the stunning 50-1 winner of yesterday’s Kentucky Derby, will be made in a day or two.

ZITO TRAINED MINER’S ESCAPE GALLOPS IN TESIO STAKES


BALTIMORE, 05-02-09---Trainer Nick Zito has saddled 19 Preakness® Stakes runners during his Hall of Fame career, including 1996 winner Louis Quatorze, with at least one starter in Maryland’s signature race in 15 of the previous 18 years. This afternoon at Pimlico Race Course, the Zito trained Miner’s Escape came home an impressive winner in the $75,000 Federico Tesio Stakes.

The Tesio has been used as a springboard to the Preakness by standouts such as Deputed Testamony (1983), Oliver’s Twist (1995) and Magic Weisner (2002). The 134th running of the middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown is set for Saturday, May 16.

Baltimore Native Wins Her First Race


BALTIMORE, MD. 5-1-09---Apprentice Jennifer Jennings notched her first lifetime win in today’s sixth race at Pimlico when her mount led from start to finish.

PTK LLC’s Plagiarize outkicked $5,000 claimers straight from the gate and Jennings spent most of her winning ride looking back for competition. The Allen’s Prospect offspring won by 7-1/2 lengths and paid $9.20.

Eight Set To Go In Federico Tesio Stakes


BALTIMORE, MD. 4-30-09---The $75,000 Federico Tesio Stakes highlights Saturday’s Kentucky Derby day celebration at Pimlico. The Tesio, often used as a prep for the Preakness Stakes, has attracted eight 3-year-olds who will race nine furlongs on the main track.

Saturday’s eleven race card has a special first post of 12:45 p.m. The Kentucky Derby will be simulcast to Pimlico at 6:24 p.m.

MARYLANDERS INVADING LOUISVILLE FOR DERBY WEEK


BALTIMORE, 04-29-09---Maryland trainers have targeted two graded stakes during Kentucky Derby week at Churchill Downs.

Co-owner and trainer John Salzman, Jr. is sending his exciting 2-year-old filly Gator Prowl up against four colts and four fillies in the $100,000 Kentucky Juvenile Stakes (GIII). The five furlong test goes as race nine on Thursday. Gator Prowl won her debut by 11-1/2 lengths at Laurel Park on April 9 under Jonathan Joyce, breaking a 45-year-old track record for the 4-1/2 furlong distance. Joyce will be back at the controls.
