Preakness News-May 7 Notes


BALTIMORE, 05-07-12---Reddam Racing’s I’ll Have Another boarded a van at Churchill Downs at 1:19 p.m. Monday for the first leg of a journey to Pimlico Race Course, where his quest for a sweep of the Triple Crown will resume in the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 19. Following a flight from Louisville International Airport to Baltimore-Washington International Airport scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. arrival, the 2012 Kentucky Derby champion will be provided an escort to Barn D on the Pimlico backstretch by the Baltimore City Police Department.

I’ll Have Another’s arrival at Pimlico for the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown will be the earliest by a Kentucky Derby winner in many years.

Kentucky Derby Winner I’ll Have Another Will Arrive In Baltimore Tomorrow


BALTIMORE, 05-06-12---I’ll Have Another finished fast to win the Kentucky Derby (G1) Saturday and he isn’t wasting any time getting to Pimlico Race Course to begin preparations for the 137th running of the Preakness® Stakes (G1) on Saturday, May 19.

Breaking the recent form of Kentucky Derby winners, I’ll Have Another is scheduled to travel from Louisville, Ky. to Maryland on Monday afternoon. It will be the earliest arrival by a Derby winner since Monarchos was shipped to Baltimore four days after his 2001 victory.

Derby Day Card Headlined By Canonero II Stakes & Jockey Challenge


BALTIMORE, 05-03-12---My Adonis remains an also-eligible for Saturday’s $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs. Should he fail to draw into the race, trainer Kelly Breen will ship his star to Pimlico Race Course for the $75,000 Canonero II Stakes.

The 1-1/16 mile race for 3-year-olds was previously known as the Federico Tesio Stakes. Canonero II was a Venezuelan-based colt who won the 1971 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Trainer Juan Arias and jockey Gustavo Avila will be on hand to present the trophy to the winning connections.

Sixth Grader Wins Preakness Portraits Youth Art Contest


BALTIMORE, 04-29-12---Lashé Speight, a sixth grader at Cross Country Elementary/Middle School, is the grand prize winner of the thirteenth annual Preakness Portraits Youth Art Contest. Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake made the announcement Sunday morning at Pimlico Race Course.

Speight is the youngest winner ever.

HUDSON STEELE WINS HENRY CLARK STAKES IN SEASON DEBUT


BALTIMORE, 04-28-12---Roger J. Weiss’ Hudson Steele was content to travel in third, then charged by the pacesetters and powered away to a victory in today’s feature at Pimlico Race Course, the $75,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes.

Contested under light rain over a firm turf course, the Clark attracted ten runners. At the end of the one mile test, Hudson Steele had won by 2-1/4 lengths with Monument Hill rallying past El Commodore to take second. The winning time was 1:38.50.

TIGER WALK EXPECTED TO BE A NEW SHOOTER IN PREAKNESS STAKES


BALTIMORE, 04-27-12---Under Armour founder and CEO Kevin Plank attended his first Preakness as a student-athlete at the University of Maryland in early 1990’s. Now the 39-year-old could own a Preakness starter.

Sagamore Farm trainer Ignacio Correas said Tiger Walk will likely be a new shooter for the 137th running of the $1 million Preakness® Stakes (G1), the middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 19.

PLETCHER RUNNER IS FAVORED IN HENRY CLARK STAKES


BALTIMORE, 04-26-12---Trainer Todd Pletcher will start Hudson Steele in the $75,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes, a race scheduled for one mile on the turf at Pimlico Race Course Saturday afternoon. The race could be used as a springboard for some to the $300,000 Dixie Stakes (G2) on the Preakness undercard.

Hudson Steele, a son of Johannesburg, has won three of five on the infield, with a victory in the Jersey Derby at Monmouth and a runner-up finish in the Ft. Marcy Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park to his credit. This will be Hudson Steele’s first start since last May and Chris DeCarlo gets his first chance to ride the 5-2 morning line favorite.

Pimlico, Macy’s Teaming Up For A Pair Of Preakness Fashion Shows


BALTIMORE, 04-25-12---The Maryland Jockey Club today announced it has teamed up with Macy’s for a pair of Preakness fashion shows.

This Saturday, April 28, at the Macy’s Towson Town Center Mall (Cosmetic Mall Entrance on the second floor), there will be a fashion presentation to help showcase what to wear to this year’s 137th Preakness® Stakes on Saturday, May 19. Raffle drawings will include tickets to Preakness and a Macy’s gift card. The show starts at 2 p.m.

Kentucky Derby Day Card Will Feature Jockey Challenge Pitting Riders From Pimlico Colony Versus Vene


BALTIMORE, 04-23-12---The Maryland Jockey Club today announced that next Saturday’s Kentucky Derby card at Pimlico Race Course will feature a Jockey Challenge featuring four riders visiting from Venezuela competing against four from the Maryland colony.

The featured race on the card will be the $75,000 Canonero II Stakes for 3-year-olds. The Venezuelan-based colt won the 1971 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. The 1-1/16 mile race was previously known as the Federico Tesio Stakes.

REGAL NURSE RUNS WIN STEAK TO EIGHT STRAIGHT


BALTIMORE, 04-19-12---Regal Nurse ran her win-streak to eight with a dominating eight-length victory in Thursday’s ninth race at Pimlico Race Course. It was the first turf score for the daughter of Monarchos, who was recently claimed by top trainer Dane Kobiskie.

“She is turf top and bottom so I was dying to see her on the grass,” Kobiskie said. “The only thing that scared me is when you have a horse who is so good on the dirt you start second guessing yourself. But she ran big and we plan on keeping her on the grass.”

PREAKNESS DAY CARD WILL FEATURE GRADE 1 RACE FOR ARABIANS


BALTIMORE, 04-15-12---Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, will join with Pimlico Race Course to host a Grade 1 race for purebred Arabian horses on Preakness Day, Saturday, May 19. The $1 million Preakness® Stakes (G1), the middle jewel of Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown, headlines the 14-race card.

The 14-race program also will feature the $75,000-added The President of the United Arab Emirates Cup, a Grade 1 race for Arabian horses. The race is limited to 14 horses and will be run on the main track at 1-1/16 miles.

BOLD AFFAIR TAKES PRIMONETTA STAKES


BALTIMORE, 04-14-12---Charles Reed and Mike Zanella’s Bold Affair rolled up on frontrunner Valiant Passion and rolled away to a convincing score in the $75,000 Primonetta Stakes, the feature offering Saturday afternoon at Pimlico Race Course.

Abel Castellano was just a passenger aboard the 4-year-old filly until he asked her to engage Valiant Passion around the far turn in the 6-furlong test. They made quick work of that rival and pulled away to win in handy fashion by 2-3/4 lengths, stopping the timer in 1:10.67. Aquitania rallied to finish second, while Enchante passed Valiant Passion to take third.
