BOLD AFFAIR HEADLINES SATURDAY’S PRIMONETTA STAKES


BALTIMORE, 04-12-12---Fillies and mares take the spotlight in Saturday’s feature offering at Pimlico Race Course, the $75,000 Primonetta Stakes. Recent stakes winner Bold Affair is the 3-1 morning line favorite to capture the 6-furlong test on the main track.

Bold Affair has won five of nine starts for trainer Howard Wolfendale. The Two Punch filly is two for three at Pimlico, including her maiden score in her debut and a third place finish in the Miss Preakness Stakes last year. Her latest effort was a galloping victory in Laurel Park’s Conniver Stakes under Abel Castellano, who retains the mount.

Ben’s Cat Wins Mister Diz Stakes For Third Straight Year


BALTIMORE, 04-07-12---The remarkable Ben’s Cat added another feather to his already crowded cap when he bounded to victory in the $75,000 Mister Diz Stakes at Pimlico Race Course Saturday afternoon, his 10th stakes triumph on an already lengthy resume.

Ben’s Cat won the Mister Diz last year when the race was taken off the turf and contested on the main track and took the 2010 version on the Laurel Park grass. Today he bounded to the finish line under Horacio Karamanos, beating front-running Steady Warrior by a neck. He stopped the clock in 57.26 seconds.

Four Maryland Runners Competing In Saturday’s Triple Crown Preps


BALTIMORE, 04-06-12---Saturday afternoon features three significant prep races on the road to the Triple Crown. Two of the graded events will have a Maryland flavor.

The $500,000 Illinois Derby (G3) at Hawthorne features a full field of 14, including three-based in the Free State: Pretension, Hakama and Done Talking. Local riders Javier Santiago, Julian Pimentel and Sheldon Russell will be aboard, respectively.

Ben’s Cat Headlines Saturday’s Mister Diz Stakes


Ben’s Cat, the 2011 Maryland-bred Horse of the Year, will make his season debut in the $75,000 Mister Diz Stakes at Pimlico Race Course Saturday afternoon. The 5-furlong test drew six turf specialists.

Maryland Jockey Club handicapper Frank Carulli made Ben’s Cat, the two-time defending champion of the race, the prohibitive 3-5 morning line favorite.

SNEAKY LIL SHINES IN SHINE AGAIN STAKES


BALTIMORE, 03-31-12---Sneaky Lil was a $7,500 claimer two weeks ago but a stakes winner today after whipping seven filly and mare rivals in the $50,000 Shine Again Stakes, the feature on opening Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.

Sneaky Lil, who paid $14.20, carried Abel Castellano to victory in 1:47 for the 1-1/16th mile distance. Trainer Jamie Ness claimed the daughter of 1996 Preakness winner Louis Quatorze out of her most recent start at Laurel Park.

ROOK RETURNS A WINNER ON OPENING DAY OF PIMLICO SPRING MEETING


BALTIMORE, 03-30-12---Apprentice rider Sarah Rook missed nearly three months after breaking her left collarbone in a spill at Laurel Park January 5. The 25-year-old made a triumphant return with a victory aboard Great Harbour ($7.20) in the seventh race on opening day of the Pimlico spring meet.

“I was locked and loaded with this one,” Rook said. “I starting getting back on horses about three and a half weeks ago and feel really good.”

PIMLICO STAKES SCHEDULE WORTH NEARLY $3.5 MILLION DURING 29-DAY SPRING MEETING


BALTIMORE, 02-28-12--- The Maryland Racing Commission approved the 2012 Pimlico Race Course racing days and spring stakes schedule at its monthly meeting this afternoon. The headline event of the eight-week meeting is the 137th running of the $1 million Preakness® Stakes (G1), the middle jewel of the famed Triple Crown, on May 19.

The marquee meet of the Maryland racing season will feature 22 stakes races for purses of $3.425 million, an increase of $525,000. Preakness weekend features 16 stakes races for $3 million.

Pimlico & Susan G. Komen-2012 Black-Eyed Susan Day


Baltimore, MD – (October 6, 2011) – Tonight, the Maryland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® and the Maryland Jockey Club joined Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to host a pink lighting ceremony at Pimlico Race Course.

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pimlico officially lit the wall of their Club House pink and announced it will stay pink throughout October to help raise awareness of breast cancer. Additionally, Pimlico Good Neighbor residents have been offered pink bulbs, generously donated by Mood-factory, to light their porches pink during October.

STRONACH GROUP ACQUIRES FULL CONTROL OF MARYLAND JOCKEY CLUB ASSETS AND OPERATIONS


June 16, 2011 –The Stronach Group today announced that it has completed a binding agreement for the purchase of Penn National Gaming Inc.’s stake in the Maryland Jockey Club. Effective July 1, 2011, following completion of the MI Developments reorganization, the transaction will give The Stronach Group full ownership of the assets and operations of Pimlico Race Course, Laurel Park and the Bowie Training Center.

Speaking on behalf of The Stronach Group, Belinda Stronach stated, “Today’s announcement is part of our ongoing commitment to the horseracing industry and to the State of Maryland. We are determined to work with industry and government officials across the state to further develop Maryland’s reputation as a premiere location for racing.”

Pimlico Announces Final Spring Meet Handle Figures


BALTIMORE, 05-26-11---The Maryland Jockey Club concluded its spring meeting at Pimlico Race Course last weekend, posting average wagering figures which were 22% lower than the 2010 spring meet. The average daily handle went from $6.26 million to $4.87 million. The stand featured 29 live racing dates, nine more than a year ago, and 21 simulcast days.

Rain forced racing officials to move turf races to the main track on 11 live racing days, significantly reducing field size.

Russell, Rigattieri, PTK LLC Capture Spring Meet Titles


BALTIMORE, 05-23-11---The eight-week Pimlico Race Course spring meeting ended Saturday afternoon with Sheldon Russell, John Rigattieri and PTK LLC winning individual titles. The 29-day stand began at the historic home of the Preakness Stakes (G1) on April 1.

Russell won 26 races during the stand to edge Julian Pimentel by two for the riding title. Russell, who also captured the Laurel Park winter meet title earlier this year, had eight multiple win days during the meet. The 23-year-old was aboard Concealed Identity in Saturday’s Preakness. The Eddie Gaudet trainee finished 10th in Maryland’s signature race.

LADY LEGENDS RETURN TO PIMLICO


BALTIMORE, 05-17-11---For both the camaraderie and the cause, an elite group of retired champion female jockeys return to Old Hilltop on Friday, May 20, to compete in the Lady Legends for the Cure Race II at Pimlico Race Course.

Seventh on a 13-race card (post time 3:05 p.m. EST) anchored by the Grade 2 $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, the Lady Legends race is part of The People’s Pink Party, a joint effort between Pimlico and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, to help raise money and awareness in the fight against the disease.
