PIMLICO STAKES SCHEDULE WORTH NEARLY $3.5 MILLION DURING 29-DAY SPRING MEETING


BALTIMORE, 02-28-12--- The Maryland Racing Commission approved the 2012 Pimlico Race Course racing days and spring stakes schedule at its monthly meeting this afternoon. The headline event of the eight-week meeting is the 137th running of the $1 million Preakness® Stakes (G1), the middle jewel of the famed Triple Crown, on May 19.

The marquee meet of the Maryland racing season will feature 22 stakes races for purses of $3.425 million, an increase of $525,000. Preakness weekend features 16 stakes races for $3 million.

Pimlico & Susan G. Komen-2012 Black-Eyed Susan Day


Baltimore, MD – (October 6, 2011) – Tonight, the Maryland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® and the Maryland Jockey Club joined Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to host a pink lighting ceremony at Pimlico Race Course.

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pimlico officially lit the wall of their Club House pink and announced it will stay pink throughout October to help raise awareness of breast cancer. Additionally, Pimlico Good Neighbor residents have been offered pink bulbs, generously donated by Mood-factory, to light their porches pink during October.

STRONACH GROUP ACQUIRES FULL CONTROL OF MARYLAND JOCKEY CLUB ASSETS AND OPERATIONS


June 16, 2011 –The Stronach Group today announced that it has completed a binding agreement for the purchase of Penn National Gaming Inc.’s stake in the Maryland Jockey Club. Effective July 1, 2011, following completion of the MI Developments reorganization, the transaction will give The Stronach Group full ownership of the assets and operations of Pimlico Race Course, Laurel Park and the Bowie Training Center.

Speaking on behalf of The Stronach Group, Belinda Stronach stated, “Today’s announcement is part of our ongoing commitment to the horseracing industry and to the State of Maryland. We are determined to work with industry and government officials across the state to further develop Maryland’s reputation as a premiere location for racing.”

Pimlico Announces Final Spring Meet Handle Figures


BALTIMORE, 05-26-11---The Maryland Jockey Club concluded its spring meeting at Pimlico Race Course last weekend, posting average wagering figures which were 22% lower than the 2010 spring meet. The average daily handle went from $6.26 million to $4.87 million. The stand featured 29 live racing dates, nine more than a year ago, and 21 simulcast days.

Rain forced racing officials to move turf races to the main track on 11 live racing days, significantly reducing field size.

Russell, Rigattieri, PTK LLC Capture Spring Meet Titles


BALTIMORE, 05-23-11---The eight-week Pimlico Race Course spring meeting ended Saturday afternoon with Sheldon Russell, John Rigattieri and PTK LLC winning individual titles. The 29-day stand began at the historic home of the Preakness Stakes (G1) on April 1.

Russell won 26 races during the stand to edge Julian Pimentel by two for the riding title. Russell, who also captured the Laurel Park winter meet title earlier this year, had eight multiple win days during the meet. The 23-year-old was aboard Concealed Identity in Saturday’s Preakness. The Eddie Gaudet trainee finished 10th in Maryland’s signature race.

LADY LEGENDS RETURN TO PIMLICO


BALTIMORE, 05-17-11---For both the camaraderie and the cause, an elite group of retired champion female jockeys return to Old Hilltop on Friday, May 20, to compete in the Lady Legends for the Cure Race II at Pimlico Race Course.

Seventh on a 13-race card (post time 3:05 p.m. EST) anchored by the Grade 2 $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, the Lady Legends race is part of The People’s Pink Party, a joint effort between Pimlico and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, to help raise money and awareness in the fight against the disease.

WYOMIA HEADLINES THE GRADE 2 BLACK-EYED SUSAN STAKES


BALTIMORE, 05-15-11---It has been a quiet week for trainer Curtis Garrison and his star filly, but that is about to change. Garrison’s multiple graded stakes winner, Wyomia, headlines a field of seven entered for the 87th renewal of the Grade 2 $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Friday at Pimlico Race Course.

Five other stakes help comprise the 13-race card, which also includes the inaugural Female Jockey Challenge and the second edition of Lady Legends for the Cure, a pari-mutuel event featuring eight retired female riders.

SHUMAN TRAINS 1,000TH WINNER


BALTIMORE, 05-12-11---Mark Shuman has known for several weeks that he was about to saddle his 1,000th winner. But where was he on the appointed day?

“He had to take his baby to the doctor today to install ear plugs,” said assistant-trainer Brooke Boyer in the Pimlico Race Course winners’ circle. “Otherwise he would be here.”

KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER ANIMAL KINGDOM RETURNS TO MARYLAND TUESDAY


BALTIMORE, 05-09-11 --- A total of 20 horses remain in consideration for the 136th running of the Preakness Stakes (G1) on Saturday, May 21.

Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Animal Kingdom is likely to have plenty of competition as the Triple Crown series moves to historic Pimlico Race Course. Six other Derby runners Nehro, Mucho Macho Man, Shackleford, Sativa, Dialed In and Midnight Interlude remain as candidates for the Preakness.

The Preakness field is limited to 14 starters.

MOTION “EXCITED” ABOUT KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER ANIMAL KINGDOM AND THE PREAKNESS STAKES


BALTIMORE, 05-08-11---The eyes of the horse racing world shift from Churchill Downs to Pimlico Race Course as the Triple Crown players set their sights on Baltimore for the 136th running of the Preakness® Stakes on Saturday, May 21.

This morning, Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Graham Motion informed Pimlico officials, including track president Tom Chuckas, that he is “excited” about Animal Kingdom’s chances in the middle jewel. Chuckas called Motion shortly after his appearance on NBC’s “Today” show to congratulate the Maryland-based conditioner on his Derby victory with the Team Valor International homebred and to personally invite him to the Preakness.

Pimlico Today-Federico Tesio Stakes Advance & Rosie Naprvnik-Kentucky Derby


BALTIMORE, 05-05-11---Seven promising 3-year-olds with possible Preakness dreams will face starter Bruce Wagner in Saturday’s $75,000 Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. The $1 million Preakness® Stakes (Grade I), the middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown, is Saturday, May 21.

The public Infield will be open for the Preakness Prep Infield Party from noon to 6 p.m. with concerts by The Plain White T’s and Sons of the Radio in the beer garden. Tickets for the concert are $30, including a bottomless mug for those 21 and over. Unlimited soda and water will be available for all ages.

POCKET PATCH CRUISES TO HENRY CLARK STAKES VICTORY


BALTIMORE, 04-30-11---Charles McGill’s Pocket Patch was the surprise winner of today’s feature at Pimlico Race Course, the $75,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes.

Returning to the races after a six-month absence, the Flint Stites trainee broke alertly in the one mile test which was contested over the firm turf. With Jonathan Joyce at the controls, the Partner’s Hero offspring tracked pacesetter Crimson Comic down the backstretch, forged to the lead heading into the turn and galloped home safely from there.
