CALIFORNIA CHROME DEMOLISHES FIELD IN $1 MILLION SANTA ANITA DERBY
SHERMAN TRAINEE WINS BY 5 ¼ LENGTHS UNDER ESPINOZA
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) _ Art Sherman knows what it takes to get a horse to the Kentucky Derby and win. He had a close-up view as an 18-year-old workout rider when Swaps won the 1955 Run for the Roses. Nearly 60 years later, Sherman is taking his own colt to Louisville as the early Derby favorite.
SANTA ANITA DERBY QUOTES
VICTOR ESPINOZA, CALIFORNIA CHROME, WINNER: “He knows what’s going on (when he goes to the gate). He’s calm and focused, but for some reason, we missed the break a tiny bit, but I put him in the race right away. I didn’t want to get stuck in traffic. It worked out well.”

SANTA ANITA HANDICAP QUOTES
MIKE SMITH, GAME ON DUDE, WINNER: “I knew he was going to run today. I knew it from the post parade when we turned around to go to the gate. He was on his toes today, he was on fire. He’s like that when he runs well. He ran big; I just had that feeling that he was going to. Down the backside he was happy, he was cruisin’, he was well within himself. He was throwing numbers, I knew we were going fast; I actually went even faster this time than I did last time (San Antonio Feb. 8). I got yelled at for going fast last time and that was forty-six; we went forty-five today and that’s at a mile and a quarter!
SAN FELIPE STAKES QUOTES
VICTOR ESPINOZA, CALIFORNIA CHROME, WINNER: “It was great. He ran like I expected him to. Everything worked out today. I wanted to try something new today so I let him go right out of the gate. I don’t know if people expected me to go right to the lead but I wanted to let him enjoy his race, I just let him go. In these races, you can’t just try and do too much with them. I think it’s important for him to do his thing for the first five-eighths and be happy. It seems like he likes both tracks. He’s been training over at Los Al but he does things so much easier at Santa Anita after having trained at Los Al. He didn’t feel tired at all after the wire.”

SANTA YSABEL STAKES QUOTES
MIKE SMITH, AWESOME BABY, WINNER: “The game plan was to break and get a clear lead so we could give her a chance to take a breather.
“We weren’t sure that she would go long; she didn’t at two. We got the first quarter in twenty-three and it was all her after that. I told Bob that I don’t know if it was her turning three or the mud today, but I finished with something left. That was real impressive to me since I didn’t know if she was going to get the distance at all. And, not only did we get it, but she was well within herself at the wire and pulled up with a lot of energy. I was really impressed.
