ELMONT, N.Y. – Fans of Rachel Alexandra can connect with the star 3-year-old filly on her own website, “Rachel’s Sandbox” (http://www.nyra.com/rachel), set up by The New York Racing Association, Inc., as she prepares for a summer campaign beginning with Saturday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park.

The multimedia site gives fans an interactive experience and allows them to keep up with the latest news and information on Rachel Alexandra as she makes her first start since her historic victory over the boys in the May 16 Preakness Stakes.

A MOOSE ON THE LOOSE IS BROUGHT TO SAFETY AT SARATOGA RACE COURSE

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y., June 15, 2009 -- Saratoga Race Course employees arrived at work Monday morning to find a cow moose wandering on the sidewalk outside track property, New York Racing Association officials said. After NYRA security worked in support of the Saratoga Springs police department to bring the moose to safety inside the gates to Saratoga Race Course, Environmental Conservation officials tranquilized the moose with the intention of delivering it unharmed back to its natural environment.

NYRA STATEMENT ON NASSAU OTB LAWSUIT


ELMONT, N.Y. – The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) President and CEO Charles Hayward has issued the following statement regarding the Nassau Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation (Nassau OTB).

“Nassau OTB, which lost the privilege of showing the NYRA signal in the homes of Nassau County residents because it illegally pirated the NYRA signal over the internet and has continuously failed to fully acknowledge its wrongdoing, tried today to get a state supreme court judge to order NYRA to restore the signal into Nassau County homes. The judge has refused Nassau OTB’s request.

AFTER 19 YEARS, JAN RUSHTON LEAVES NYRA


ELMONT, N.Y.-- Jan Rushton, the New York Racing Association’s paddock analyst and popular television host, has resigned her position. Rushton has been away since the end of January to tend to her family in South Carolina. Earlier this year, her brother, Doug, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“I would like to thank all the fans, horsemen and fellow NYRA workers for all the support through my years in racing but I have to resign my position to be caretaker for my brother, who has a serious illness,” said Rushton, who began working for NYRA in May, 1995. “This has been a hard decision, but I feel that family must come first. I will miss all of you and thank you for all your thoughts and prayers.”

SPA OPEN HOUSE ON SATURDAY


It takes a lot of work to put on the greatest Thoroughbred racing meet in the world, and Saratoga Race Course is eager to get help established for its 2009, 36-day meet that runs from Wednesday, July 29-Labor Day, Monday, September 7.

To meet its demand for help at Saratoga, the New York Racing Association will conduct Open House interviews for different positions. These include turf work, general labor, greenhouse work/planting, betting clerks, security, ushers, parking attendants and admission cashiers,

RACING’S BEST REWARDS PROGRAM JUST GOT BETTER


ELMONT, N.Y. – The New York Racing Association, Inc. has announced a new and upgraded NYRA Rewards rebate schedule with new awards levels and increased rebates. The monthly point categories have been rearranged and the payout percentages have been increased for each type of wager.


“The new NYRA Rewards rebate schedule will result in all of our members receiving higher rebates,” said NYRA Director of Marketing Neema Ghazi. “The new schedule makes it easier for our members to qualify for higher rebates because we have reorganized our monthly point categories. In addition, the percent payouts for every type of wager have been increased.”

NYRA SUPPORTS BILL TO ELIMINATE WITHHOLDING TAX


Elmont, NY – The New York Racing Association, Inc. supports a bill that was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on April 28 that would eliminate the automatic 25 percent federal withholding on pari-mutuel winnings of $5,000 or more for bets that carry odds of 300-1 or higher.

The bill, titled the “Pari-Mutuel Conformity and Equality Act” (PACE Act – H.R. 2140) was introduced by Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) with Rep. Charles W. Boustany, Jr. (R-LA) as the co-sponsor.

Patrick Mahony promoted to NYRA Senior Vice President


A respected expert in Pari-Mutuel operations, Patrick Mahony has been promoted to the post of Senior Vice President of Mutuels, The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced today. His previous title had been Vice President of Pari-Mutuel Operations. Mahony joined NYRA in 2003 after a distinguished career at Gulfstream Park, Calder, Hialeah, Atlantic City Race Track, Garden State Race Track, and Monmouth Park.

“At NYRA, Pat has worked diligently to position our Mutuel department as one of the finest in the industry,” NYRA President and CEO Charles Hayward said. “He’s put a solid management team in place while establishing the highest standards of credibility and integrity. In addition, Pat has worked with the New York State Racing and Wagering Board and industry organizations on national tote strategies and protocols.”

NYRA & DRF Partner on Saratoga Seminars


DAILY RACING FORM ANNOUNCES HARVEY PACK’S RETIREMENT AS HOST AND NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH NYRA FOR SARATOGA HANDICAPPING SEMINARS

NEW YORK, NY, April 2, 2009 -- Daily Racing Form today announced that Harvey Pack is retiring as the longtime host of DRF’s popular daily Saratoga handicapping seminars, which is ending its 17-year run at Siro’s restaurant, and that DRF has entered into a strategic partnership with the New York Racing Association to sponsor and provide analysts for an expanded and reformatted “Talking Horses” for the Saratoga race meet.

“Talking Horses, Presented by Daily Racing Form” will be conducted in a live audience format in 2009. The popular longstanding daily television show will be extended to 45 minutes, 11:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. every racing day and broadcast live in the Carousel Restaurant facing the grandstand backyard. Scratches and changes have been moved to 11:40 am to allow the live program to be broadcast uninterrupted on all on-track monitors.

NYRA & MSG PLUS ANNOUNCE EXCITING LINEUP OF LIVE HORSE RACING TELECASTS


New York, NY, March 27, 2009 – MSG Plus, in partnership with New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA), announced today a strong slate of live horse racing programming for this summer. MSG Plus will kick things off with the important Kentucky Derby prep race, the Wood Memorial, on Saturday, April 4, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Then starting on Saturday, August 1, the network will telecast five “Saturdays at Saratoga,” going live from the historic Saratoga Race Course for eight championship caliber stakes. Jason Blewitt, Eric Donovan and Andy Serling will provide commentary for the telecasts.

CIANI OBIT


Father Francis Ciani, a Roman Catholic priest who was one of the biggest fans of New York racing, died at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, N.Y. on March 7. He was 95.

A regular on the backstretch and on the front side at Aqueduct, Belmont Park and Saratoga, “Father Quinella” was a beloved man who listed God, family and country as his priorities. Racing was a close fourth.

NYRA NOW ON SIRIUS RADIO TO DEBUT SATURDAY, MARCH 7


NYRA Now, a half-hour Sirius Radio show dedicated exclusively to Thoroughbred racing at the New York Racing Association’s Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course, will debut Saturday, March 7 from 12:30 p.m. – 1 p.m. Eastern.

Hosted by Dave Johnson and Bill Finley, NYRA Now will air on Sirius Channel 122 and XM Channel 143 and will be available to 20 million Sirius XM subscribers. It will offer handicapping, interviews with owners, trainers and jockeys and feature segments.
