SUFFOLK DOWNS’ 2013 LIVE RACING SEASON BEGINS SATURDAY, JUNE 1


All patrons making a $10 donation to The One Fund Boston on Opening Day to receive a specially designed “Boston Strong” t-shirt or hat and track program

EAST BOSTON, MA - The 2013 live racing season at Suffolk Downs will begin Saturday, June 1 and continue through November 2, the track announced today as it introduced its initial racing schedule and other plans for the upcoming season.

PIERMARINI, RIGATTIERI, MONARCH STABLES TOP STANDINGS AT SUFFOLK DOWNS


EAST BOSTON, MA - Familiar names topped the 2012 standings as jockey Tammi Piermarini, trainer John Rigattieri and owner Monarch Stables once again took home year-end honors at Suffolk Downs as the track concluded its live racing season on Saturday, November 3.

SUFFOLK DOWNS POSTPONES MONDAY’S CARD DUE TO STORM


Suffolk Downs has postponed its live racing card scheduled for Monday, October 29 due to the approaching storm. The track will also be closed for simulcasting.
Live racing and simulcasting are scheduled to resume on Wednesday. The final day of the 2012 live racing season will now be Saturday, November 3 in conjunction with the Breeders’ Cup. Simulcasting of all 15 Breeders’ Cup races will be available Friday and Saturday.

APPRENTICE JOCKEY JORGE VARGAS, JR. FIRST CAREER WIN AT SUFFOLK DOWNS


EAST BOSTON, MA - Apprentice jockey Jorge Vargas, Jr. recorded the first victory of his career when his mount Rockstar Cowboy won the fifth race at Suffolk Downs on Wednesday, October 17.
Trained by Robert Monahan II, the three-year-old son of Rockport Harbor broke sharply and contested the early lead before seizing command and holding on by half a length to break his maiden in the six furlong sprint. Rockstar Cowboy returned $18.20, 6.60 and 3.60.

Jockey David Amiss Records 1,000th Career Victory in African Prince Stakes at Suffolk Downs


EAST BOSTON, MA - Jockey David Amiss recorded the 1,000th victory of his career on Saturday, September 22 at Suffolk Downs, guiding Adahai to the wire first in the $50,000 African Prince Stakes before an exuberant crowd of 9,212 on hand for the 2nd Annual Suffolk Downs Food Truck Festival.

Adahai, a three-year-old son of Yonaguska trained by Wayne Marcoux, rated off the front running Danly's Dream and drew clear in mid stretch, saving enough to hold off a late charging Fonzy and complete six furlongs in 1:12 4/5. Adahai is now undefeated from two starts. Adahai returned $5.00, 3.00 and 2.60.

JOCKEY DYLAN DAVIS BREAKS HIS MAIDEN ON WEDNESDAY AT SUFFOLK DOWNS


EAST BOSTON, MA - Apprentice jockey Dylan Davis recorded the first win of his career in the seventh race at Suffolk Downs on Wednesday, September 19 aboard Soldier Sam ($8.40) for trainer Colin Sherwood.

Soldier Sam sat off the pace and made a bold last-to-first move after weaving through traffic and angling to the middle of the track under Davis, catching Big Cash and prevailing by a lengths and a half.

Suffolk Downs Takes Next Step to Earn Gaming License


(EAST BOSTON - August 10, 2012) - After rolling out development plans for a $1 billion destination resort in June and conducting several local community meetings since then, Suffolk Downs has formally declared its intent to compete for one of Massachusetts’ commercial gaming licenses by filing the state’s form and submitting the required non-refundable $400,000 fee with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, track official announced today

“We begin this formal part of earning a license to develop a world-class destination resort at our 77-year-old racetrack with great enthusiasm and with the understanding that our project must set the standard for gaming development in Massachusetts,” said Richard Fields, Suffolk Downs principal owner. “With our partners, Caesars Entertainment, we are committed to a proposal that will create more jobs, tourism benefits and local economic development than any other project in the state.”

AN ENCORE FROM ‘EMMA’ GIVES JERKENS, 83, PRIORESS VICTORY


SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Hall of Fame Trainer Allen Jerkens, 83, has won 3,833 races in his career, but none stands out as much as when he saddled Onion to an upset victory over Secretariat in the 1973 Whitney Handicap.

On Whitney Day in 2012, Jerkens added to his legacy by sending out Emma’s Encore to a nose victory in the Grade 1, $300,000 Prioress, a six-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies.

Bobby Raymond Saddles Four Winners Wednesday


EAST BOSTON, MA - Trainer Bobby Raymond enjoyed a remarkable day on Wednesday, August 1, saddling four winners on the 10-race card, three of which came with Jill Jellison in the irons.

Raymond and Jellison kicked off their trifecta in the second race with Danny's Whish ($18.20). They were back in the winner's circle after Bruski's Star ($6.20) took the fifth with a front-running maiden victory. The pair capped off their triple with Kathysay'schaseme ($7.40) in the sixth for owner Touchdown Stable.

Piermarini Becomes Third-Leading Female Rider of All-Time


EAST BOSTON, MA - Jockey Tammi Piermarini, who last year became just the fifth woman ever to reach the 2,000-win milestone, recorded three victories on Monday at Suffolk Downs to surpass Patti Cooksey as the third-leading female rider of all-time with 2,139 career wins.

Piermarini, 45, accomplished the feat with a front-running score aboard Massachusetts-bred Victor Laszlo ($2.80) in the seventh race for owner Patricia Moseley, former chairwoman of Suffolk Downs, and trainer George Saccardo. Piermarini now trails only the retired Julie Krone (3,704) and Rosemary Homeister (2,527), who is currently riding at Arlington Park.

MISCOE GRAY WINS THE $50,000 RISE JIM STAKES; PIERMARINI WINS THREE


EAST BOSTON, MA - Miscoe Gray and Jorge Vargas pulled off the front-running upset in the $50,000 Rise Jim Stakes on Saturday, July 21 at Suffolk Downs, completing six furlongs in 1:12 over a field of 11 Massachusetts-bred rivals.

Trained by Tom McCooey, Jr., the Nine Maple Farm homebred son of Cozzene broke well and secured a spot on the rail and led every step of the way, saving enough to hold off Same Day Pleasure.
