Alo Pura to win as Jebel Ali rearranges fixture


There is racing at Jebel Ali on Friday afternoon with the course having rescheduled the meeting called off last week after the sad death of His Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Ahmad Al Mualla, the ruler of Umm Al Quwain.

The Shadwell organisation of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum again sponsor the feature race with the name of Kingwood House Stables attached to the main 1600m handicap.

Big Drama Targeted for Holy Bull

Harold Queen’s Florida homebred colt Big Drama will make his highly-anticipated 3-year-old debut in the $150,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) to be run at 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park on Sat., Jan. 31, according to trainer David Fawkes.

“He’s been a distance twice and for right now we want to keep him at two turns,” said Fawkes. “I’m going to keep him home at Calder to train for the race, keep everything the same. (Eibar) Coa will ride him back.

AQUEDUCT NOTES, Wednesday, January 7, 2009


Aqueduct Racetrack will be open for live racing six days next week, Wednesday, January 14, through Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 19.

There will be no live racing on Tuesday, January 20 and Wednesday, January 21, but the Big A will be open for simulcasting on those days.

Tuesday night marked the third straight year that a New York jockey has joined New York Jets, Giants, Islanders, Red Bulls and other top athletes at the annual “MDA Muscle Team,” a gala event at New York’s Chelsea Piers that raised nearly $1 million in support of the work of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

GERALD BENNETT, VICKI OLIVER SADDLE TWO WINNERS


OLDSMAR, Fla. (January 6, 2009) Trainers Gerald Bennett and Vicki Oliver each escorted two of their trainees to the Winner’s Circle today. Bennett’s first victory of the day came with Real Conquest. Luis Antonio Gonzalez rode the four-year-old daughter of Full Mandate, who was bred in Florida by Barry Ostrager and Steven Mukamal and is owned by Robert Killian. Bennett and Gonzalez hooked up again to win the eighth race with Right Flanker. The six-year-old Florida-bred Outflanker gelding scored his ninth win from forty-eight lifetime starts for owners Winning Stables and Ray Rech.

MEADOWLANDS POSTS GAINS IN HANDLE FOR 2008


Despite negative trends throughout the racing industry, total wagering on racing at the Meadowlands in 2008 was up more than five percent.

All sources handle on the Meadowlands’ January – August harness meet was $354.8 million, up 7 percent from the $331.7 million wagered in 2007. For the recently wrapped 17-date Holiday Harness Meet, the total average daily handle was $2,645,212, a 10.4 percent increase over the 2007 daily average of $2,396,958.

MJC ANNOUNCES FINAL 2008 HANDLE FIGURES


LAUREL, MD. 01-06-09---The Maryland Jockey Club concluded the 2008 racing season with average wagering figures 22.5% lower than 2007. All sources handle totaled $668.1 million as compared to $875.8 million the previous year. Racing 14 fewer days in 2008, the daily handle decreased from nearly $3.8 million to just over $2.9 million each day.

Wagering figures for the 17-week Laurel Park fall meeting were 39 percent lower than a year ago. Numbers for the Laurel Park winter (down 17%) and Pimlico Race Course spring (down 16%) stands were also down from the previous year.

Delaware Park Announces 2009 Live Racing Dates


Wilmington, Del., January 6, 2009 — Delaware Park announced today it will offer 116 days of live thoroughbred racing at the Stanton oval in 2009 with the meet starting on April 25 and concluding November 7. The schedule for Delaware Park’s 72nd season of exciting live racing was recently approved by the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission.

Dates Set For Three ‘09 Kentucky Derby Future Pools; Oaks Future Bet Back To Single Pool Format


LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 6, 2009) – Dates for the three pools of Churchill Downs’ 2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) are set and a single pool will be offered in each of the three months preceding the 135th renewal of the $2 million-guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) on May 2. Meanwhile, the seven-year-old Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (“KOFW”) will return to a single pool format in 2009, and that pool will run concurrent with the Derby Future pool offered in March.

Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is set for Feb. 12-15, Pool 2 is scheduled for March 12-15 and the third and final pool will be conducted April 2-5. Wagering on the lone 2009 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager is set for March 12-15. The Oaks Future bet was conducted in a single pool in its first year in 2003, but had been offered in a three-pool format in each the past five years. Dates for the four-day pools for the two Churchill Downs future bets were approved Tuesday, Jan. 6 by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

JANUARY SCHEDULE PREVIEW


January racing is underway at Tampa Bay Downs with five live Thoroughbred racing days a week. Dark days are scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays, with the exception of a bonus live racing day on Wednesday, January 21.

Tampa Bay Downs rings in the New Year with Skyway Festival Day on January 17th, in which the bright three-year-old stars of the Oldsmar oval compete in the $65,000 Gasparilla Stakes for fillies and the $75,000 Pasco Stakes for colts and geldings.
