A. P. Indian digs in for G1 glory in Vanderbilt

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Arnaud Delacour earned the first Grade 1 victory of his training career Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course, saddling Green Lantern Stable's homebred A.P. Indian to a 1 ¼-length score over Holy Boss in the, $350,00 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap.

A. P. Indian, ridden by Joe Bravo, tracked the pace from second, following Delta Bluesman through an opening quarter-mile in 22.26 seconds and a half in 44.63. In the stretch, A. P. Indian hooked up with Holy Boss, the tepid 3-1 favorite who gained ground on the outside nearing the three-furlong pole and, after dispatching Delta Bluesman at the top of the lane, prevailed in a hard-fought stretch battle.

The Alfred G. Vanderbilt G1 Quotes

Arnaud Delacour, winning trainer of A.P. Indian (No. 4): "I thought he fitted well with these horses. It was a little tricky, but knowing he's in good form right now, we thought we had a shot. I had a lot of faith in the horse."

"If you like at his career, he's had some minor setbacks. But all the time he comes back. He seems to come back even stronger. It's worth giving him time for that."

Bowling Green (G2) Quotes

Chad Brown, winning trainer of Flintshire (No. 2): "He likes to run and cover and Javier has a really good feel for him, so I wasn't too worried. When Twilight Eclipse finally made the move and they all went, it was a pretty easy decision to steer him outside for home."

"Javier showed a lot of poise. He didn't panic. The horse ran terrific. He's a true champion. They're a great team."

Stellar Wind Stuns Beholder in Clement L. Hirsch Stakes

In a stunning upset, Hronis Racing’s Stellar Wind, the Eclipse Award winner as champion three-year-old filly of 2015, outran 1-9 favored Beholder in the stretch to win the featured $300,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes Saturday at Del Mar.

Beholder, a three-time Eclipse Award champion and widely considered one of the truly outstanding female runners of recent years, suffered her first defeat in more than two years as Stellar Wind and jockey Victor Espinoza stalked their vaunted rival from the start of the mile and one-sixteenth race, never allowing Beholder and her Hall of Fame pilot Gary Stevens to get more than a length away.

Curlin Quotes

Chad Brown, winning trainer of Connected (No. 1) and second-place finisher Gift Box (No. 4): "This horse [Connected] is lightly raced but we've always thought a lot of him. He's developed in each race. Running two turns today and being the pacesetter to be able to hold on and prevail he showed a lot."

"Gift Box ran a good race as well. He's coming off a longer layoff so he might have needed this race and was stuck along the rail but he performed well. With both the horses running 1,2 in any order that's what we were hoping for. I hate to run them both against each other but with limited opportunities I thought this race worked out well for both of them as a prep heading towards the Travers."
