Statement from Turfway Park re change to Kentucky racing schedule

“The changes to Turfway Park’s 2013 racing schedule make it possible for us to support a purse structure befitting Kentucky racing. It was a difficult exercise but the outcome reflects our continued commitment to horsemen, horseplayers, and the Kentucky circuit while we continue to work toward an even playing field.

“With our new schedule, we project that Turfway’s purses will nearly double while providing an active 2013 stakes schedule, including our centerpiece, the Spiral Stakes in March. We deeply appreciate our employees, fans, horsemen, and community leaders for their continued support and enthusiasm for Northern Kentucky's contribution to the Commonwealth's signature industry.”

Startin Something Heads Classen Field on Thistledown Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 2, 2012 – The $50,000 Dr. T. F. Classen Memorial Stakes highlights Thistledown’s season opener on Friday, the first of 10 stakes scheduled for Friday afternoons. Although written for Ohio accredited fillies and mares 3 years old and up, the six furlong race drew nine older distaffers.

Leading the field is 4-year-old Startin Something, a multiple state-restricted stakes winner who most recently was third behind 2011 Ohio accredited female champion Indian Ink in the Bobbie Bricker Memorial Handicap at Beulah Park. The seven-length defeat the Bobbie Bricker and the fact that “most recently” means November raise a small flag, but she ran second sprinting in the Royal North Stakes at Beulah to begin her 2011 season after a similar layoff. That finish may warrant another slight caveat: only two of Startin Something’s six wins were sprints. But trainer Tim Hamm, who also bred and owns the filly as Blazing Meadows Farm, has her ready; after training on Keeneland’s Polytrack in recent weeks, she worked three furlongs in :36.80 Monday on the Thistledown dirt, fastest of 11 at the distance. Scott Spieth, fresh off his 4,000th career win, has the mount. Startin Something is the highweight at 122 pounds.

FLORENCE, Ky., March 21, 2012 – Trainer Todd Pletcher, who won the Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes in 2001 with Balto Star and in 2005 with Flower Alley, will be looking for his third win in the race when he sends out the uncoupled duo of Heavy Breathing and Holiday Promise.

Big Field Likely for Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes

FLORENCE, Ky., March 19, 2012 – The field for the Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes (G3) at Turfway Park this Saturday is expected to fill or nearly fill the gate as trainers solidify plans for their Kentucky Derby hopefuls. The race’s $500,000 purse virtually assures the winner a spot in the Derby gate, as proved true for the 2011 Spiral Stakes and Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom.

Mr. Prankster won the first two local preps for this year’s Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes, racing first at 6 1/2 furlongs and then at a mile, but he finished fourth in the third prep, the 1 1/16-mile John Battaglia Memorial on March 3. Trainer Mike Maker looks for him to rebound this Saturday.
