Joshua Tree looks for winning edge in International

TORONTO, October 6 - Joshua Tree, trained by Marco Botti, is back for a third consecutive appearance in the Grade 1, $1.5 million Pattison Canadian International, set for Sunday, October 14 at Woodbine.

The son of champion Montjeu won the 2010 edition by a head over Mores Wells, when trained by Aidan O’Brien. Last year, as an 11-1 shot, he finished second to an even bigger longshot, 22-1 runaway winner Sarah Lynx, while under Botti’s care.

Shenandoah Lady tests two turns, looks to deliver a first in Mazarine

TORONTO, October 3 – Shenandoah Lady, set to tackle 1 1/16 miles in Saturday’s $200,000 Mazarine Stakes at Woodbine, will look to deliver trainer Steve Attard his first graded stakes score.

A dark bay daughter of the late Purim (20-1 winner of the 2007 Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile), Shenandoah Lady ventures into the Grade 3 Mazarine off a sixth-place finish, albeit just three lengths behind the winner, in the Grade 2 Natalma, contested over a ‘yielding’ E.P. Taylor Turf Course on September 15.

WEG introduces fractional betting on U.S. tracks

TORONTO, October 2 - A good day has arrived for local horse race handicappers.

Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) today announced that fractional betting on U.S. racing, something that WEG has been pursuing for an extended time, will be available on the Keeneland races for the start of their meet in Lexington, Kentucky, this Friday, October 5.

Moonlit Beauty shines in Classy ‘n Smart

TORONTO, September 30 - Moonlit Beauty made every pole a winning one en route to a 4 3/4-length score in Sunday's $125,000 Classy 'n Smart Stakes, at Woodbine.

The chestnut daughter of Perigee Moon-Global Gossip, trained by John LeBlanc Jr. and ridden by Eurico Rosa da Silva, became the lone speed in the 1 1/16-mile 'Poly' route when Kay's Grace was a vet scratch at the gate and Moonlit Beauty took full advantage to persevere for her fourth added-money score.

Another ‘Classy’ showing for Moonlit Beauty?

TORONTO, September 27 – Moonlit Beauty, who eked out a gutsy score in the Victoriana Stakes last month, goes for her second consecutive win, when she faces seven rivals in Sunday’s $125,000 Classy ‘n Smart Stakes, at Woodbine.

After securing her eighth lifetime victory courtesy of a head triumph in the 1 1/16-mile (turf) Victoriana on August 18, Moonlit Beauty will look to improve upon her second-place finish in last year’s Classy ‘n Smart when she finished second, 2 ¼ lengths behind Bear Its Time in the 1 1/16-mile Polytrack feature.

Minshall trainee looks to ‘Strut’ her best stuff in Victorian Queen

TORONTO, September 26 – Strut the Course, fresh off an authoritative maiden score, looks to make her added-money debut a winning one, when the Barb Minshall trainee takes on six rivals in Saturday’s $125,000 Victorian Queen Stakes, at Woodbine.

A two-year-old bay daughter of Strut the Stage, Strut the Course recorded an impressive victory in her second start, on September 8, turning a one-length lead at the stretch call into a six-length triumph in the six-furlong Polytrack event.

La Tia leaps to La Lorgnette victory

TORONTO, September 23 - La Tia bounced off the rail in the stretch run, but jockey Justin Stein held on strong as the Grade 3 Arlington Oaks champion persevered to win the $153,500 La Lorgnette Stakes, Sunday at Woodbine.

The dark bay daughter of City Place-La Adelita, trained by Brian Williamson for owner Salvador Hernandez, took the field through splits of :25.16, :49.43 and 1:13.51 in the 1 1/16-mile 'Poly' route, and appeared to be home and cooled out only to duck in with an eighth of a mile to go and hit the rail.

Mark Casse’s Uncaptured the early choice for 2013 Kentucky Derby

TORONTO, September 19 - Uncaptured, a multiple stakes-winning juvenile based at Woodbine Racetrack, was made the 30-1 future book favourite this morning for the 2013 Kentucky Derby, by the Wynn casino in Las Vegas.

The two-year-old Lion Heart-Captivating colt, bred in Ontario by William D. Graham and trained by Woodbine's leading conditioner Mark Casse, is undefeated in four starts at Woodbine this year, including scores in the Clarendon, Vandal and Swynford Stakes.

Wise Dan sharp in Ricoh Woodbine Mile romp

TORONTO, September 16 - Morton Fink’s homebred Wise Dan, the prohibitive favourite at 1-2, made it look easy on Sunday, coasting to victory in the Grade 1, $1-million Ricoh Woodbine Mile.

Ridden by John Velazquez, who was winning a record third Mile, after victories aboard Riviera in 2000 and Leroidesanimaux in 2005, Wise Dan patiently followed the leaders Worthadd and Artic Fern through fractions of :23.78 and :46.90, before slipping through on the inside over a firm E.P. Taylor Turf Course, when the field straightened for home.

Emma-Jayne Wilson records her 1,000th win on Sunday

TORONTO, September 16 – Champion jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson collected her 1,000th lifetime score aboard D’wildcat Gold in Sunday's first race at Woodbine.

"It's something I've been chasing,” said Wilson, who piloted Mike Fox to victory in the 2007 Queen’s Plate. “For a couple weeks I had a bit of a lull, but it's good to get the milestone and now I'm counting to 1001. Let's go!”

I’m Boundtoscore does just that in Summer

TORONTO, September 15…I’m Boundtoscore, ridden by Sarah Rook, made every pole a winning one while notching a 10-1 upset in the $251,000 Summer Stakes, presented by TVG, Saturday at Woodbine.

The one mile turf contest for two-year-olds, a Breeders’ Cup ‘Win and You’re In’ event, drew a well-matched field of eight, with Best Play, the only maiden in the race, sent postward the surprising 5-2 choice.

Wise Dan, Cityscape top Ricoh Woodbine Mile

TORONTO, September 13…Morton Fink’s Wise Dan and Juddmonte Farms’ Cityscape headline a solid field of nine for Sunday’s Grade 1, $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile.

The 16th edition of one of the premier grass races in North America will be televised live across Canada on The Score in a special two-hour presentation from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm ET, with post time scheduled for 5:42 pm. The winner receives $600,000. The telecast will also feature coverage of the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Stakes, presented by VTech, live at 4:37 pm.
