JULIEN LEPAROUX, MIDNIGHT BALLET, Winner: “I think the two-turn distance helped her. She’s a big filly and she breaks OK, but she’s not real fast. The six furlong (allowance) race (Oct. 4 at Santa Anita) was just too fast for her. I decided to put her on the rail, save ground and follow the favorite (Scarlet Strike). I got her out at the quarter pole and she made a nice run.”
JOE TALAMO, SCARLET STRIKE, Third: “She really didn’t have an excuse. She had a perfect trip and we saved ground. She was heads-up for the lead turning for home and they just ran by her.”
Trainer Quotes
THOMAS PROCTOR, MIDNIGHT BALLET, Winner: “I wasn’t really worried about that last race. There weren’t any Beholders in here and that was a speed favoring track. She kind of got clobbered coming out of the gate, so I think it was a pretty good race for her. I don’t know if she’s nominated for the (Grade I, $500-guaranteed Hollywood Starlet (Dec. 8), I’ll have to see. We weren’t thinking about it, but you never know. She’s a big, long filly. I’d always heard that (her sire) Midnight Lute had a breathing problem or he would have run long. So we’ll see. It’s nice to win a race.”
JERRY HOLLENDORFER, SCARLET STRIKE, Third: “She didn’t win, no comment.”
Notes: Midnight Ballet was not among the early nominees to the Starlet. She would have to be supplemented for $10,000 with an additional $10,000 to start…The stakes win was the first at the Autumn meet for Leparoux since he captured the 2009 Hollywood Prevue with American Lion.
