TORONTO, September 14 - Trainer Greg De Gannes may have a second ticket to next month's Breeders' Cup after his two-year-old filly C Karma earned herself a guaranteed berth with her neck victory in Sunday's Grade 3, $150,000 Natalma Stakes at Woodbine.

As a 'Win and You're In' event, the winner of the one-mile turf event automatically earns a position in the starting gate for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita on October 24.

C Karma held off a late challenge from 45-1 shot Freyga to capture the Natalma, which was her first stakes victory. Koonunga Hill stayed on late to finish third.

A Florida-bred owned by Pamela Edel, C Karma traveled the mile in 1:40.74 over the 'soft' E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

For the first half-mile, winning jockey Jono Jones settled the filly, who was also bred by Edel, about 2 1/2 lengths off the pace in fourth early

C Karma is a daughter of Exchange Rate, who is also the sire of De Gannes stable star Southern Exchange, a recent fourth-place finisher in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and a Breeders' Cup Juvenile (October 25) hopeful.

"For all of those listening from Three Chimneys, Exchange Rate is most definitely my favorite stallion," said De Gannes. "I always thought she was a high-quality filly. She's a homebred. There's nothing more pleasing (for an owner) then having a homebred jump up and do this."

In her start before the Natalma, the Ontario Debutante, C Karma was shuffled back on the turn and forced to circle horses to get back into contention. She closed strongly in the stretch and wound up third, only 1 1/4 lengths behind Juliet's Spirit.

"It was a rough trip," said De Gannes. "Racing luck sometimes is on your side, sometimes not on your side. As it was today, it was on our side."

Justin Stein, who rode Michael Doyle trainee Freyga, said his filly just missed.

"We had a perfect trip," he said. "At one point, when the other horses started stopping, I knew we had third. Then, I knew we had second. She just kept plugging away and didn't give up. She might have been 45-1, but I knew she would run better than the odds showed. She ran a good turf race last time out and I expected her to be even better this time and she was."

C Karma elevated her earnings to $161,100 and improved her record to two wins from five starts.

C Karma returned $11.70, $6.20, $4.40, combining with Freyga ($28.80, $13) for a $330.20 exactor. Koonunga Hill ($6.30) rounded out a triactor worth $3,476.30.
