The stakes, topped by the $150,000 California Cup Classic Presented by City National Bank, are part of a 10 race card restricted to California breds.
The John C. Mabee California Cup Mile Presented by TVG drew the most nominations – 55. Included on the list for the turf affair are Liberian Freighter and Colgan’s Chip, who finished a nose apart when 1-2 in the Oak Tree Mile, a Grade II, on Oct. 9, as well as multiple graded stakes winner The Usual Q.T.
Both the Cal Cup Sprint and CTT/TOC Cal Cup Matron had 38 noms. The Sprint, which is at six furlongs over Cushion Track, lured defending champ and 2009 Breeders’ Cup Sprint upsetter Dancing in Silks, Bestdressed, who was third in the race a year ago, Cost of Freedom, and Robert K. Kerlan Memorial Handicap winner My Summer Slew.
Among those nominated to the Matron, run at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track, are Ashland, Del Mar Oaks and Honeymoon winner Evening Jewel and Camille C and Excellent News, both winners on California Gold Rush Day on April 24 at Hollywood Park.
The pair of races for 2-year-olds – the Bob Benoit Juvenile for colts and geldings and the Robert H. Walter Juvenile Fillies – had a total of 102 noms. Among the 53 for the Juvenile are five trained by Doug O’Neill, who won the 2009 renewal with Bench the Judge.
Among the Juvenile Fillies nominations are Phil D. Shepherd Handicap winner Faisca, Swiss Wild Cat, who won the CTBA Stakes July 23 at Del Mar and California Nectar, who earned her maiden victory here Oct. 3.
The other California Cup race is the John Deere Distaff, which is run at six furlongs on turf. The 43 nominations are topped by the Marty Jones-trained duo of Unzip Me and Dotsy Jean along with La Nez and U R All That I Am, who won both the B. Thoughtful and Fran’s Valentine Stakes during Hollywood Park’s spring-summer meet.
