Oceanport, N.J. – Alexandra White’s Colony Club wore down pacesetter Inspired in the shadow of the wire to capture the $60,000 Klassy Briefcase Stakes by a neck on Sunday afternoon at Monmouth Park.

Trained by the owner, Colony Club covered the 5 ½ furlongs over firm turf in 1:02.52 and returned $54.40, $13.80 and $5 across the board. Pacesetter Inspired, dispatched as the even money favorite, completed the $149 exacta and paid $3.20 and $2.20. It was a nose back to hard-charging Sounds of the City, who returned $3.60 to show.

“She really likes a firm turf and that’s what she got today,” said the winning conditioner. “She was on her toes in the paddock and I knew she’d be pretty close today. She’s a classy horse and was able to run down that other filly (Inspired).”

Ridden by Geovany Garcia, Colony Club earned her first victory of the year on Sunday and her first trip to the winner’s circle since taking the Fort Monmouth Stakes here last June. The 6-year-old mare by Lion Hearted from the Wild Again mare Wild Shine now sports a record of 6-4-0 from 21 starts, good for earnings of $205,125.

Live racing continues at Monmouth Park on Friday, July 27 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:45 p.m. Highlighting the weekend of racing is the $1 million Haskell Invitational, the signature event of Monmouth’s summer season, which will be contested for the 45th time on Sunday.
