In his only outing this year, the 4-year-old gelded son of Posse posted a 10 ¾-length victory a $50,000 state-bred stake at Oaklawn Park on April 2. Last year, the Arkansas-bred conditioned by Michael Stidham won his first five races of the season by a combined margin of 29 ½-lengths before finishing second and unplaced in his last three. His final victory in 2010, the seven furlong $400,000 Red Legend Stakes at Charles Town on June 19, may have taken just a little bit to much out of him.
Beyond the Moscarelli, Stidham is not sure where Comedero will go next.
“We have not really decided yet,” he said. “We have him nominated to several stakes on the east coast, but for now our plan is to just take it one race at a time.”
Perhaps the main threat will come from Gold Square’s Rule by Night, who will be making his 2011 debut. Last year, the 4-year-old son of Malibu Moon ended his campaign by posting a 9 ¼-length score in seven furlong $60,000 Groovy Stakes at Aqueduct on November 21. The Kentucky-bred conditioned by Steven Asmussen sports a career record of four wins and two seconds from eight starts with earnings of $194,900.
Richard Bertram and Elaine Klein’s Homerun Berti, who recently posted a 3 ½-length going six furlongs at Keeneland on April 8, is out of the dam Allamerican Bertie who won the 2002 Delaware Oaks. Homerun Berti, sports a Delaware Park record of three wins from six starts. The 5-year-old gelded son of Forestry also notched a 3-length going six furlongs at the Fair Grounds on January 1. The Kentucky-bred trained by Steve Margolis has a career record of five wins, two seconds and a third from 12 starts with earnings of $141,630.
