JEREMY ROSE, SMART BID, WINNER: “He did everything perfect. He broke good and got his ears up right away. I was able to get him back, no problem and he ran great. I hadn’t ridden him in a long time (Dec. 8, Philadelphia Park) and he showed huge improvement today. He was just a big, playful baby and we always knew he had a lot of talent, but his mind is catching up with his body—now we can see what he can do. This is my second win at Santa Anita, but it’s my first stakes win and it’s a great feeling.”
GRAHAM MOTION, SMART BID, WINNER: ‘’He’s a serious horse. It seemed like a good idea (to run in the Damascus) a month ago, and then when you get here, you start questioning yourself if he’s not ready. He ran like I really thought he could. He’s a very impressive work horse . . . he’ll stay here for the winter and the Malibu would be a consideration. I hope to have some other horses out here, and the Malibu would be a consideration for Smart Bid. The race set up well for us, as I thought it would. He’s got a lot of speed. When he ran in the Sham here last spring, he was just too sharp. He wasn’t quite ready for that. I thought seven-eighths would be a good trip for him.’’
NOTES: The winning owner is George Strawbridge of Wilmington, Del., who races as Augustin Stable.
