Seeking her third straight stakes win at the meet, Frolic’s Revenge, ridden by Luis Saez, was allowed to settle comfortably in second through the early stages of the Sweettrickydancer while Montessa G, returning from nearly eight months on the sidelines, was put aggressively on the lead by jockey Jesus Rios, setting splits of :23.20, :47.72, and 1:11.17.
“When I was coming to the three-eighths pole I moved a little bit, but she didn’t want to pass the other horse; she didn’t want to run,” Saez said. “So I had to start riding her a little hard, and that’s what she responds to. And once she started to run, she was able to pass and do enough to win.”
Sent from the gate as the overwhelming favorite, Frolic’s Revenge returned $2.80, $2.40, and $2.10 for the win. Montessa G paid $5.20 and $3.80 for second, while Imperial Strike charged home fast to finish third, returning $5.20.
A 3-year-old homebred daughter of Vindication, out of the multiple stakes-winning mare Stormy Frolic, Frolic’s Revenge is a six-time winner in 14 career starts with earnings of $255,020.
Frolic’s Revenge is the first three-time stakes winner at the meet, adding a late-April Calder Oaks victory to her recent Regal Gal and Sweettrickydancer scores.
