Away from the gate slowly, Smartys Emperoress was rated off a blistering pace contested by Going to Kukaro and Miss Maggie Girl, who set fractions of :21 and :43 1/5 for the first half mile. The 4-year-old daughter of Holy Roman Emperor kicked in through the stretch to rush past the tiring leaders to capture her third win in seven starts.

The Tampa Bay Downs shipper ($35.20) ran five furlongs in :54.97. Favored Going to Kukaro, ridden by Jeremy Rose, held second money in the $56,500 optional claiming allowance, 1 ¼ lengths ahead of Caribbean Lady and jockey Joe Bravo.
