Juddmonte Farms, Inc.’s Starformer assumed control soon after the start and led virtually every step of the way in Gulfstream Park’s featured ninth race run at 1 3/8 miles over firm turf on Monday. Ridden by Hall of Fame rider Edgar Prado for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, Starformer was able to carve out slow early fractions to the tune of :50 for the half mile and 1:16 1/5 for three-quarters. In the end, the 4-year-old filly by Dynaformer had plenty left to hold of Kathern’s Kitten and Sex Appeal who settled for second and third respectively. Sent off the 6-5 favorite in the field of 11 fillies and mares, Starformer returned $4.60. With the win, Starformer improved her lifetime record to 2-1-3 from eight starts and has now earned over $100,000 in career earnings.
Who’s Hot: The owner-trainer-jockey combination of Team Valor International, Graham Motion and John Velazquez teamed to captured Monday’s fifth race with M’Dearest. This comes just two days after the trio teamed to win a pair of races on the Saturday card – including the fifth race with Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom. All three races were on the turf.
Quote of the Day: Peter Walder, who saddled Force Freeze to a dominant win in Saturday’s Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship (G2) in near track-record time – “He came back great. Now it’s on to Churchill for the race on Derby Day (Grade 2 Churchill Downs Handicap). I’ve never been to the Derby, so it will be good to go with such a fast horse. Saturday was a great day. Everyone had a great time. It was good to see him run such a big race.”
Work of the Day: Augustin Stable’s Safe Crossing worked a bullet five furlongs in :59 Monday morning at Gulfstream Park. The 4-year-old filly by Stormy Atlantic is exiting a second-place finish on the turf behind stakes winner Louvakhova. The Jonathan Sheppard trainee began her career with consecutive victories last season, but is winless in five starts since then including a seventh-place finish in the Valley View (G3) at Keeneland in October. Monday’s work was the fastest of 25 at the distance and over a second faster than any other move.
