Jamaican Smoke led the field of fillies and mares through opening fractions of :22.94 and :46.27 while maintaining a one-length lead over Royal Start in second. The 3-year-old daughter of Latent Heat began to gradually increase her lead over the field as she entered the stretch, held a commanding lead at the eighth pole and increased her advantage from there under steady hand urging by jockey Corey Lanerie.
It was the second victory for Jamaican Smoke, who was making just her third career start Friday. She was third in her career debut in March at Gulfstream Park. The $33,180 winner's share of the purse increased her lifetime earnings to $68,306.
Jamaican Smoke was the 2-1 second choice and returned $6.60, $3.40 and $3. Refugio, ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, finished well to be second and returned $2.80 and $3 with Royal Start, under Brian Hernandez Jr., finishing another six lengths back in third and returning $5 to show.
Racing continues Saturday with an 11-race program highlighted by the 75th running of the $100,000-added Louisville Handicap (Grade III), a Pick 6 carryover of $7,451 and a Super Hi-5 carryover of $6,877. Racing kicks off at 12:45 p.m. (all times Eastern) and the Louisville 'Cap is scheduled to be run as Race 10 at 5:25 p.m. The Pick 6 will begin with Race 6 at 3:23 p.m. and the Super Hi-5 will take place on Race 11 at 5:55 p.m.
