For the first time, the four-year-old son of Bold Executive will race in the white and scarlet colours of owner Bruno Schickedanz, who purchased the 10-time winner for $245,000 at last Saturday's Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
Formerly a resident of the Mark Casse stable, the bay colt's new trainer is Mark Fournier, who has been impressed with his new pupil since he arrived from Lexington this past Tuesday.
A 13-time winner at Woodbine this season, Fournier said he's a bit concerned the Ontario-bred, who will be ridden by Patrick Husbands, may come up a bit short.
"It's always a concern when a horse comes in and you only have a few days with him," offered Fournier. "If we had him a little bit longer, we could have breezed him. He was training towards the race from what I picked up from the (Mark) Casse crew. That's why we're taking it on. I gave him a strong gallop today. He handled it really well. It wasn't like he was blowing the barn down. It seemed like he was pretty fit."
Legal Move is a six-time stakes-winner. This year, he captured the Kenora and the Jacques Cartier with strong late rallies. Most recently, he edged The Great Caruso in an allowance prep for the Kennedy Road.
Fournier said it is the colt's competitiveness and consistency that have made him a fan of the colt even while he was still in the barn of a rival conditioner.
"Every race he's always there. He's got the heart of a lion," he said. "I'm excited to get to train such an animal."
An earner of $832,089 in 23 starts, Legal Move was purchased by Schickedanz with the long-term plan of standing him as a stallion. For now, the colt, who was fifth in last year's Kennedy Road, will continue to be called on to run down his opponents and provide thrills for his many Woodbine backers.
"He's going to Florida for the winter," said Fournier. "If he stays sound, we plan on racing him here again next year."
Schickedanz seeks his second victory in the Kennedy Road, having won the 2000 edition with Wake At Noon.
The Kennedy Road is slated for race six on Saturday's 10-race programme.
