Because of an ominous forecast for bitter Arctic cold, compounded by strong winds, the New York Racing Association has decided to cancel its scheduled live race card at Aqueduct Racetrack on Friday, January 16.
Aqueduct will be open for simulcasting on Friday. There is no parking or admission charge, and gates open at 11:30 a.m.
Friday’s scheduled races will come back as extra races during the week.
At 11 a.m. on Thursday, the temperature was 18 degrees but it felt like 5 degrees because of wind chill. Friday’s National Weather Service forecast for Ozone Park, N.Y. called for a high of about 19 degrees by 3 p.m., but the wind chill effect is expected to make it feel between 6 degrees above and 7 degrees below zero.
Normal racing schedule will be back on Saturday, with a nine-race card featuring the 90th running of the $65,000-added Evening Attire Stakes for three-year-olds and up at mile and a sixteenth on the inner dirt track.
First race post time on Saturday will be 12:30 p.m.
