NTRA RACING TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY SCHEUDLE CONCLUDES SATURDAY WITH LIVE COVERAGE OF THE SEASON’S FINAL DERBY PREP, THE COOLMORE LEXINGTON STAKES FROM KEENELAND

WHAT: Live coverage of the Grade II, $300,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes, a test for three-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., is the main attraction on this week’s fourth and final installment of “NTRA Racing to the Kentucky Derby”. The Lexington is the final meaningful Derby prep race leading up to the Run for the Roses, and the rich purse virtually guarantees an available Derby starting berth to the race winner should his owners decide to continue down the path to Louisville. In 1999, Charismatic parlayed a Lexington triumph into victories in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

WHEN: Saturday, April 18, 5:00-6:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

TOP CONTENDERS FOR THE COOLMORE LEXINGTON STAKES: This Polytrack contest will attract a large, deep field of hopefuls looking to justify a start in the Kentucky Derby two weeks hence. The contender with the most credentials is Square Eddie, who finished a game second in last year’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He again finished second in the January 17 San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita and has not raced since due to injury. But after a long series of workouts, trainer Doug O’Neill has declared Square Eddie fit and ready for a start in the Lexington. In his lone prior Keeneland appearance, Square Eddie rolled home to victory by nearly five lengths in last year’s Grade I Breeders’ Futurity. Two other horses to keep an eye on are Advice and Masala. Both are trained by Todd Pletcher, who sent out Behindatthebar to capture last year’s renewal of the Lexington.

ANNOUNCERS: Hosting the telecast at Keeneland will be Joe Tessitore, joined by analysts Jerry Bailey and Randy Moss, reporters Jeannine Edwards and Jay Privman, and handicapper Hank Goldberg.
