MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Nov. 24, 2011) – Harlequin Ranches’ 4-year-old Irish-bred filly Oregon Lady posted a mild upset in the $100,000 My Charmer Handicap (G3) at Calder Casino & Race Course on Thanksgiving Day, defeating Trip for A.J. by a neck. Snow Top Mountain was third with Denomination, the favorite, finishing fourth in a very close finish.
Ridden by jockey Paco Lopez for trainer Roger Attfield, Oregon Lady ran the 1 1/16 miles over a yielding turf course in 1:52.82 and paid $7.80, $5.00, and $3.20. The My Charmer was the filly’s first race over the Calder course.
Winning trainer’s quotes:
Roger Attfield (by phone from Payson Park) – “Usually, you would be concerned about soft ground, but in her case I was rather pleased that it came up that way. She’s handled it well before and did today. She was a very slow-maturing 2-year-old, but is just now coming around to be a nice filly. I believe she’ll go longer distances when we ask her. We’ll look for something at Gulfstream for her next.”
(Note: Attfield sent out Charles Fipke’s 4-year-old homebred filly Perfect Shirl for a 28-to-1 upset victory in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4. The daughter of Perfect Soul worked five furlongs in 1:00 1/5 Wednesday morning at Payson Park and is being targeted for a start in the $1.8 million Hong Kong Vase (G1) on Dec. 11, according to the trainer.)
Winning jockey’s quotes:
Paco Lopez – “The pace up front was pretty slow, so my filly was able to rate nicely just behind Jeffrey’s horse (jockey Jeffrey Sanchez aboard Callmethesqueeze). We sat behind them (the leaders) until it was time to make our move on the turn and I thought we might have to go around, but a path opened up on the inside and I pushed her through. She responded great when I asked her.”
