Laurence Foggle’s Our Friend Harvey found his happy place last July 26 when he raced five and a half furlongs on the Monmouth turf. He won that allowance race, and then came back from a fruitless Florida campaign this winter to capture the Wolf Hill Stakes on June 1. Same course, same distance.

Now the 4-year-old by Put It Back gets his third chance at five and a half furlongs on the grass in Sunday’s $60,000 John McSorley Stakes, and trainer Tim Hills says “Harvey” is ready.

“He’s good to go,” the trainer said. “I expect him to run well again.”

Our Friend Harvey has caught a turf course with some give in it (rated “good”) in both his wins here, but with no rain in the forecast he might find a very firm strip awaiting him Sunday.

“It shouldn’t be a problem,” Hills said. “He ran well over the firm course at Gulfstream, even though he didn’t win. He had some really weird trips there, some bad racing luck, but he ran well.”

Hills, who trained a stable in New England for years before making Monmouth his summer home, is well-acquainted with Our Friend Harvey and all the relatives. Foggle breeds all his own horses, and Hills has been the trainer of nearly all of them.

Our Friend Harvey is out of the Out of Place mare Very Laughable, who is a half-sister to I’m Only Laughing, the horse Hills will saddle in Saturday’s Bob Harding Stakes on the turf. Both are out of the mare Carefree Laughter, a New England stakes winner who has produced four stakes winners.

“It’s a great family,” Hills said of the Foggle-breds. “A very sound family. Carefree Laughter was sound, and I’m Only Laughing is 6 and still going strong.”

Joe Bravo, who was aboard in the Wolf Hill Stakes, will ride Our Friend Harvey again in the McSorley.
