Third in last year’s edition of the five-furlong turf race, Smart And Fancy and jockey Ramon Dominguez stalked the early leaders much of the way as Sentebale set the pace, pressured by Canadian Ballet and Ahvee’s Destiny. Canadian Ballet got the lead in deep stretch, while Ahvee’s Destiny launched a fierce rally along the rail, but Smart And Fancy surged on the outside to get to the finish line first.
Smart And Fancy, a 6-year-old daughter of Not For Love, paid $4.40. She is trained by Tony Dutrow at Philadelphia Park. Smart And Fancy has now won six times on the turf in nine tries, including last year’s editions of the Buckland Stakes at Colonial Downs and the Light Hearted Stakes at Delaware Park.
The Very One Stakes Quotes
Tom Iannotti, assistant to winning assistant Anthony Dutrow – “Ramon has ridden this horse since she was 2-years-old. He knows her well. She’s got heart and class. She knows where the line is and she knows how to get there. She got clear and the sixteenth-pole. She hit that last gear and found the line. Ramon is an excellent rider and did a fantastic job.”
Ramon Dominguez, winning jockey – “She really tries hard. The leader really dug in. I wasn’t sure we got up until the very end. I really wasn’t trying to time my move, but she did it.”
