EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. * Fox Hill Farms’ Solar Flare sat patiently off the early pace before taking command around the far turn and holding all rivals safe at bay in winning the $47,000 allowance/optional claiming feature at the Meadowlands on Monday afternoon.

Ridden by Terry Thompson, Solar Flare covered the mile and a sixteenth over a fast main track in 1:45 flat and returned $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10 as the odds-on choice in the field of five older colts and geldings. It was 2 ½ lengths back to Saratoga Lulaby, who completed a $6.20 exacta and returned $2.40 and $2.20. Dragon Fi, who finished another length and a half back in third, paid $2.60 to show.

“Everything worked out perfectly here,” said winning trainer J. Larry Jones. “We were using this race as a prep for a race at Aqueduct on Nov. 15 (Stuyvesant Handicap, $100,000, Grade 3) and this should be the perfect set up for him.”

Bred in Argentina, Solar Flare was runner-up in the Grade 1 Suburban Handicap this year and then finished seventh in the Grade 1 Whitney, when sent off as the favorite. Last out he was third in a restricted stakes at Delaware.

Monday’s win moved his lifetime mark to 5-4-1 from 12 starts.

Live racing continues at the Meadowlands on Tuesday, Oct. 28 * first post 1:10 p.m.
