East Rutherford, NJ [Oct. 12, 2009] -- Southern Rainbow dueled the leader Hermosillo into submission in the final strides to win the $48,000 eighth race allowance on Monday afternoon at Meadowlands Racetrack.

Ridden by Harry Vega, Southern Rainbow pressed Hermosillo through fractions of :23.3, :47 and 1:10.1 and prevailed after a hard-fought stretch drive by a nose in 1:34.2. Southern Rainbow paid $22.40 to win the mile event over a fast track. Samhoon capitalized on a ground-saving journey to finish third.

Charles Assimakopoulos owns and trains Southern Rainbow, a 5-year-old son of Thunderello out of the Dixie Brass mare Exactly Dixie.
