OLDSMAR, Fla. (December 9, 2008) The $65,000 Lightning City Stakes, a five furlong turf test for fillies and mares which headlines Opening Day of the 2008-2009 Tampa Bay Downs racing meet, has drawn nominations from 49 fillies and mares. Among the nominees is Mike Hennig’s trainee Jazzy (ARG), a graded stakes winner who has earned $245,261 for owners Team Valor International, Robert Muir and Des Scott. While Jazzy has never attempted the five-eighths of a mile turf condition, the mare has achieved a stakes win and a second-place finish on the lawn at 5 1/5 furlongs.

Taletobetold, an Eddie Kenneally trainee owned by Robert Dewitt, is one of the high money earners nominated to the Lightning City Stakes nominees with $358,932 in her lifetime bankroll. The four-year-old Tale of the Cat filly comes off of a victory in an allowance event at Churchill Downs at the five furlong distance on the lawn and has not finished out of the money in her last three starts. Charlie Papa, a seven-year-old Indian Charlie mare who set a track record here on April 21, 2007 for the about five furlong distance on the turf, is also nominated to the Lightning City Stakes. Charlie Papa is owned by Kennedy and Hess Thoroughbred Racing and is conditioned by Connie Kendall.

Racing resumes on Saturday, December 13th for the opening day of Tampa Bay Downs’ 83rd season of live Thoroughbred racing. Post time for the first race is 12:25 PM, and gates open at 11:00 AM.
