ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 28, 2009) – Unbeaten Our Minesweeper, an Idaho-bred who won a pair of stakes in Northern California, will attempt to transfer his form to Santa Anita on Saturday when facing six other 2-year-olds in Oak Tree’s 35th running of the $58,000 Jack Goodman Stakes at six furlongs.

Tyler Baze will take over aboard Art and Betty Sutter’s homebred grey gelding by the Giant’s Causeway stallion Cause Ur Mine. After breaking his maiden at Golden Gate in June, Minesweeper captured Santa Rosa’s $57,000 Cavonnier Jr. Stakes and Golden Gate’s $50,000 Bart Heller Stakes for trainer Michael Lenzini.

With Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert sending out a pair of opponents as is John Sadler, Our Minesweeper figures to be tested for class in the race known as the Sunny Slope Stakes prior to being renamed in 2008. Baffert and Sadler are in a tight battle for the Oak Tree training title.

Baffert will have Garrett Gomez, the national money-won riding leader for the past three seasons, to handle Zayat Stables’ Macias. The son of Purge was a dominant maiden winner in his second start on Oct. 2. Rafael Bejarano will be aboard stablemate Marcello, who has won twice at odds-on for Peachtree Stable while starting four times.

Baffert, noted for his success with young horses, has saddled one past winner of the Goodman, Premier Property in 1998. The event has produced such elite runners as Ancient Title (1972), Flying Paster (1978), Snow Chief (1985) and Pleasant Tap (1989).

Sadler’s pair of Goodman entrants include Ike and Dawn Trash’s Hurricane Ike, who is dropping out of the graded stakes ranks. After breaking his maiden in his debut at Hollywood Park in July, the Florida-bred has been chasing some of country’s top 2-year-olds in the Grade II Best Pal Stakes, the Grade I Del Mar Futurity and the grade I Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in Kentucky. Joe Talamo rides Hurricane Ike.

Privilaged, Sadler’s other entrant, was a 3 ½-length maiden winner at Del Mar while chased by third-place Macias before finishing third at 5-2 odds in an optional claimer at the Oak Tree meet. Joel Rosario regularly rides the C R K Stable colt.

The complete field for the Jack Goodman Stakes, with jockeys and weights in post position order: Privilaged, Joel Rosario, 118; Our Minesweeper, Tyler Baze, 120; Runaway Bandido, Mike Smith, 118; Macias, Garrett Gomez, 118; Marcello, Rafael Bejarano, 120, and Hurricane Ike, Joseph Talamo, 118.

The Jack Goodman Stakes will be slotted as the third race on a nine-race program. First post is at 12:30 p.m.
