A Grade II at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track, the Everett – formerly called the Milady, but changed in 2012 to honor the longtime chairwoman, chief operating officer and president of Hollywood Park, who died in March – is one of two stakes that will be run Saturday, May 19 at Betfair Hollywood Park.
A winner of four of 11 with earnings of $682,985, Zazu, who is stabled at Betfair Hollywood Park, has won two of four locally and was second in one of her defeats.
Zazu isn’t the only Grade I winner nominated to the Everett. Include Me Out, the winner of the Santa Margarita March 17, and Aruna, who rallied to take the Spinster over Polytrack last Oct. 9 at Keeneland, are also on the list.
Trained by Ron Ellis for Samantha Siegel’s Jay Em Ess Stable, Include Me Out, a 4-year-old daughter of Include, has won four of eight and banked $363,600. Before the Santa Margarita victory, she was a dominant 4 ¼ length winner of the Grade II La Canada.
A 5-year-old Mr. Greeley mare, Aruna is one of a pair nominated to the Everett by owner-breeder Flaxman Holdings, Ltd. and trainer H. Graham Motion. A multiple graded stakes winner on turf, Aruna is joined by Pachattack, who comes off a victory in the Grade III Doubledogdare April 20 at Keeneland.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who has never won the Everett, nominated a trio – American Lady, Awesomemundo and Ellafitz, who won the Grade II Bayakoa Handicap last Dec. 4 in her most recent start at Betfair Hollywood Park.
The remaining nominations for the Everett follow: Caelis, Kayce Ace, Love Theway You are, Regal Betty, Sugarinthemorning, Suzettes Friend and Unusual Hottie.
The other graded stakes scheduled for May 19 is the $100,000 Railbird. A Grade III for 3-year-old fillies, the seven-furlong race attracted 12 nominations, including Killer Graces, the winner of the Grade I Hollywood Starlet last December for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.
Entries for the Everett and the Railbird will be taken Wednesday, May 16.
Post time May 19 at Betfair Hollywood Park will be 11 a.m. to accommodate the simulcast of the 137th Preakness Stakes from Pimlico.
In the Preakness, I’ll Have Another, who is stabled here and broke his maiden over Cushion Track at first asking last July 3, will try to repeat his Kentucky Derby win.
An I’ll Have Another baseball cap will be given away May 19 at Betfair Hollywood Park – one per paid admission while supplies last.
