FIELD COMMISSION OVERCOMES LAYOFF AND NEW SURFACE TO WIN PONCHE
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (June 9, 2012) – Despite the fact that he was returning from a 19-month layoff and had never raced on a dirt track in his career, Edward Seltzer’s 7-year-old Field Commission added his name to the list of thoroughbred millionaires on Saturday, winning the six-furlong $75,000 Ponche Handicap at Calder Casino & Race Course in a stakes record time of 1:09.75.
“I was very impressed,” jockey Manoel Cruz said. “The trainer told me to keep the horse busy and make sure he was closer than usual. So when he broke, I gave him a couple of kisses and asked him to go, and he took his position perfectly.”
