GULFSTREAM TODAY 1.20.12
R. Larry Johnson’s 4-year-old filly Strike the Moon appeared well on her way to victory as the 9-to-10 favorite in mid-stretch of Friday’s $60,000 third race allowance feature at Gulfstream Park, but West Point Thoroughbreds’ 5-year-old mare Bell of the Hall flew down the outside to score by a half-length in the 6 ½-furlong test.
A Florida-bred chestnut daughter of Graeme Hall, Belle of the Hall broke last of seven under jockey Elvis Trujillo as Ice Wine Stable and Wesley Ward’s Final Mesa set a fast early pace down the backstretch with Strike the Moon in close attendance, but the favorite edged away to lead by three lengths going past the eighth pole before being run down in the final sixteenth.
