SMOKE THE DEVIL TAKES MONMOUTH’S HESSE HANDICAP

Oceanport, N.J. – Jose I. Samaniego’s Smoke the Devil wore down pacesetter Hermosillo in the stretch to capture the $75,000 Charles J. Hesse III Handicap as Javerre won the $60,000 New Jersey Breeders’ Handicap and Ima Jersey Girl took the $60,000 Jersey Girl Handicap at Monmouth Park on Saturday – a day of racing dedicated to horses bred in the Garden State.

Conditioned by the owner, Smoke the Devil covered the mile and a sixteenth over the fast main track in 1:46 4/5 and returned $9, $5 and $3.60 as the favorite in the field of 11 colts and geldings. Uncle Otto, who finished a length behind the winner, rallied to complete the $40.60 exacta and paid $4.80 and $2.80. It was another length and a half back to Hermosillo, who paid $3.20 to show.
