Captain Rio cruises thoroughbred feature
Two Thoroughbred handicaps shared the billing at Sharjah on Saturday afternoon on a six race card generously sponsored by Al Basti Equiworld.
The first of them, over the minimum trip of 1000m, was won by the Satish Seemar-trained Captain Rio who was opening his UAE account at the 13th attempt and recording only his second career victory.

Double for Al Ketbi in Abu Dhabi
Trainer Mohamed Al Ketbi was the man in form at Abu Dhabi on Sunday evening when saddling a double, including Mudallal Al Reef who won the featured 1600m handicap under Jesus Rosales.
It was third win from eight career starts for the six-year-old and Rosales said: "It looked a hot race so we have to be delighted with the outcome. The trainer has some nice horses and it is nice to ride him a winner."

Jig fast steps at Jebel Ali
Treble Jig was the very impressive winner of Friday's Jebel Ali Stakes, kindly sponsored by Shadwell, the UK arm of the breeding operation of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the 1950m highlight of Friday's Jebel Ali meeting.
Always in front under champion Jockey Wayne Smith, riding for his main employer trainer Musabah Al Muhairi, Treble Jig was kicked clear about 300m out before recording an easy 10 lengths victory from last year's winner Emmrooz who looked to be travelling ominously well until Smith committed the winner for home leaving any potential challenger struggling.

Emmrooz looks for consecutive Jebel Ali Stakes wins
Shadwell, the breeding empire of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, sponsors three of the six races at Jebel Ali on Friday afternoon, including the Listed Jebel Ali Stakes over 1950m.
The feature carries the name of Shadwell itself and Emmrooz bids to become the first horse to win the race twice after a comfortable victory last year. He is trained on the course by Dhruba Selvaratnam for his main patron and the racecourse owner His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and will be partnered by William Buick.

Etisalat to sponsor Meydan’s next racemeeting
Dubai, UAE, 10 January, 2012 – The excitement of the Dubai World Cup Carnival continues on Thursday, January 12 when the Dubai Racing Club will stage the first “black type” races, the highest level of the sport, at Meydan. The seven race programme, sponsored by Etisalat includes the opening rounds of the Al Maktoum Challenge, one race for Purebred Arabians and another for Thoroughbreds.
These two races both run over 1600 metres, lead-off a tally of 33 Group and Listed, known collectively as black type, events for both breeds to be run at the 2012 Dubai World Cup Carnival and Dubai World Cup.
Al Maktoum Round I Challenge - Trends
The first Al Maktoum Challenge Round I was run in 1994 and was won by Red Rainbow, trained by Dhruba Selvaratnam and ridden by John Murtagh.
Godolphin’s Saeed bin Suroor has trained the most winners of this race, seven in total, while Lanfranco Dettori is the most successful jockey with four wins.

Abu Dhabi’s New Year doubles
The first meeting of 2012 in the UAE produced doubles for jockeys Royston Ffrench and James Doyle, as well as trainer Tony Manuel, on a seven race card at Abu Dhabi.
Doyle and Manuel made the perfect start to the New Year by combining to win the opening two 1400m maidens with Al Waqqad leading in the dying strides to land the opening race before stable companion BH Almozieg scored a more comfortable victory over the same course and distance.

The Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club is the main sponsors at their own meeting this Sunday, the first UAE racing fixture of 2012 and a seven race card awaits racegoers.
The official highlight is the penultimate race, a 2200m Purebred Arabian handicap for which 13 have been declared.

Al Raihe nabs Jebel Ali Stakes prep
Yirga, ridden by Royston Ffrench for Champion Trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe, won the featured 1800m Jebel Ali Stakes prep race on Friday afternoon.
Kindly sponsored by Derrinstown Stud, the Irish arm of the breeding empire of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the race attracted a competitive field of eight but it was Al Raihe's runner, who had been second in a 1600m race on his seasonal return a fortnight ago, who posted a reasonably comfortable victory to the delight of Ffrench.

Ibn Al Nafis looks an interesting contender for trainer Satish Seemar, who also has Eddie Jock among the eight declared, but stable jockey Richard Mullen has chosen Ibn Al Nafis, explaining: "Eddie Jock will run his usual solid race but Ibn Al Nafis is a horse we have always thought a lot of. He won his first three ever starts, all at Jebel Ali, but then missed last season. He has needed his two runs so far this season and hopefully the trip will suit as he was staying on last time."

Jaasoos wins HH The President of the UAE Cup
The Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club-sponsored HH The President of the UAE Cup, a 1400m Listed race for Thoroughbreds, was the highlight of Sunday evening's final meeting of the calendar year in the Capital and was won easily by Jaasoos.
Trained by Dhruba Selvaratnam for his main patron His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the seven-year-old posted a comfortable victory under James Doyle to gain compensation for his unlucky second three weeks ago in the 1600m National Day Cup, a race he had won in both 2009 and 2010.

Competitive field line up for HH The President Of The UAE Cup on Sunday
The Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club is again the generous main sponsor at their own meeting on Sunday, including the AED184,000 HH The President Of The UAE Cup, the second of the track's three Thoroughbred feature races this season.
It looks a cracking renewal of the 1400m highlight with 13 declared and the majority look to hold a winning chance headed by Il Grande Maurizio and seeking a fourth win this season already.
