Turfway ends winter meet with declines

FLORENCE, KY . . . April 4, 2008 . . . Turfway Park ended its 2008 winter/spring live race meet with declines in wagering on its races both on-track and from all sources.

On-track handle, the amount wagered by patrons at Turfway on Turfways races, was $7,906,448, a 10.4 percent drop compared to the same period in 2007. Wagering on Turfway races from all sources was $150,672,555, down 9.6 percent.

The meet ran January 1 through April 3 and included 62 live racing days. Extreme cold and a March weekend snow storm forced the cancellation of all races on six days and one race on a seventh day. Two Monday cards were added and cards on other days were extended to bring the total number of races run to 624, the same as in 2007.

Jockey McKee gets win 1,000

FLORENCE, KY . . . March 30, 2008 . . . Jockey John McKee hit the 1,000 career-win mark Sunday when he guided Bid Made to a 5 1/4-length score in the eighth race at Turfway Park.

The son of former jockey David McKee, the 26-year-old McKee grew up in Hamersville, Ohio, a small town east of Cincinnati. His first win came May 27, 2002, aboard Storm Cup at River Downs, and he also earned his first stakes win that year at the Ohio track, guiding Waist Gunner John to take the Buckeye Native Stakes. McKee finished the 2002 River Downs meet as leading rider, in the process breaking Steve Cauthens 1976 record for most wins by an apprentice.

Claimed for $5K, Princess Composer now open stakes winner

FLORENCE, KY . . . March 29, 2008 . . . Princess Composer dictated every step of the $50,000 Fairway Fun Stakes at Turfway Park Saturday, completing her rise from $5,000 claimer to open stakes winner.

With Jose Camejo aboard, Princess Composer broke from the outside post in the field of nine and steadily angled over, taking the lead entering the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile race. Never more than half a length in front until the stretch, Camejo kept the brakes on as Princess Composer set the early pace at a comfortable :24.91 and :49.23. With half the field bunched around her, she was between horses coming into the stretch. Racing to her inside, Try to Remember headed her about a strides worth, but Camejo shook up Princess Composer and she easily pulled away to win by 1 1/2 lengths.
