The Saratoga of the Northwest, Part ll

This is the time of year when horseplayers and racing fans concentrate on two of America’s favorite destination venues; Saratoga and Del Mar. But in all the excitement over these traditions, lost in the shuffle is the other summer place to be: Les Bois Park.

That’s right, Boise, Idaho!

You mean you’ve never heard of that other parimutuel hot-bed? Well, look at it this way: Parimutuel is derived from the French word, meaning “between us.” Les Bois, also translated from the same language, means “the woods.”

It’s entirely appropriate that a park would be in a wooded area or, vice versa--which is the Latin phrase for “the other way around.” Well, Boise is about as far as you can get from San Diego and Saratoga Springs. Wonder if they cut down trees at Les Boise Park? Just askin’.

Bob Smith, he of the HRI Faithful Bob Smith’s, is indulging his wagering wanderlust where the tree meets the potato. So let’s see how the other horse-playing half—or, at least, Bob Smith—lives. We have received the following missives on a horseplayer’s life at Les Bois:

The racing surface at Les Bois Park does seem to be uniform and it plays fairly. Of course, when the track circumference is 6 furlongs, being on or near the lead at the head of the stretch is key.

The most popular Thoroughbred distances are five furlongs (out of a chute) and a six and a half furlong “marathon.” Quarter-Horses run mostly 350 yards.

Saratoga opens tomorrow and I yearn to be there. I will allow DRFBets to transport me. If you hit a trifecta with a 34-1 over an 8-1 over a 10-1 at the meet, please let me and all your loyal HRI readers know you had it. I will be interested in the payoff. Best of luck at the windows and continued success at the keyboard.

We went to the races one night recently and did well. Afterward we went to the casino where they had drawings for cash and horse-race trivia prizes. On the third drawing of the night my wife drew my name--50 bucks!!

The race track announcer is the emcee for the evening. John Petti is his name.....good guy, school teacher here in Boise and this is his summer job. He also is the chart caller and makes a $2 tip sheet for sale inside the entrance. In addition, he hosts the handicapping seminars they hold occasionally throughout the meet.

The air conditioning failed inside his announcer's booth recently.....the temperature at post time at night was 101-F. In his booth it was 114: Yikes! But all in all, it was a very good day for us. Hope you have a very good opening weekend.

Well, we had even more fun this past weekend at the "Saratoga of the West”: the $1 Pick 3 paid $3.60.

Recently, a 12-year-old won two real distance races [one mile and a mile and a quarter]. It was claimed out of the second one!

Unfortunately, the tote board failed during the day before for the first two races so Petti had to announce odds prior to the races being run. He also had to announce all the payouts.

Luckily, it was “Beef Night at the Races.” They gave away four delicious steaks in a soft cooler after each race. How do I know they were delicious? My wife was the winner after the 7th race!

She also caught a "Beef, it's what's for dinner" t-shirt thrown into the crowd from the gate-crew truck. Didn't have quite the drama of Tom Durkin's ride off. In addition, she won $163 first pull in the casino before the first race.

Talking to Petti afterwards, he said that after this meet he goes on the road for the Ely and Elko race meets--very small tracks in Nevada. They are not covered in the DRF but by a company called TruForm.

Petti has to work with the woman who calls the charts, especially when it comes to the running line comments. When he first started with her, she had written that a Quarter Horse who lost by 53 lengths "needed the race." Imagine if chart callers at major tracks wrote something like that??

Petti also told me that they have small race meets in Montana on Tribal land there. A few of the races are restricted to owners who are members of the local Tribe.

Reading the names of the owners was just as much fun as watching the races. One owner's last name is Iamnotafraid. He also told me about the races they run at the eastern Idaho State Fair.

It is called "Indian Racing." No enhanced guest experiences here either; nor apparently the need to be politically correct.

There are three contestants who ride bareback. They circle the track then leap off their mount and jump on another horse waiting just ahead. That’s the one they ride around to the finish.

You cannot wager parimutuelly but Petti said that a lot of money changes hands at the rail.

The Beef Council people had a heifer out front of the grandstand during the races. The contest was to guess her weight. Just another thing you won't see this year at…the Spaaaahhh. The things I learn out here are amazing.

The Saratoga of the Northwest, Part l

Let’s face facts: This is the time of year when horseplayers and racing fans concentrate on two of America’s favorite destination venues; Saratoga and Del Mar. But in all the excitement over these traditions, lost in the shuffle is the other summer place to be: Les Bois Park.

I am no French language scholar but after having experienced this track a half-dozen times now, it should be more accurately translated into "the sticks." After spending last summer in heaven, aka Saratoga Springs, I am suffering from the class bends.

Les Bois features very short fields, obscure breeding, sometimes fields mixed with Thoroughbred and Quarter-Horses, where the policy on Lasix and Bute is “use it if you got it.” The small purses demand that trainers supplement their income through the occasional betting coup, or worse.

Surprisingly, the races here are quite formful. Many times it seems that there are only two possible winners per race. Problem is they are both even-money or less. But on one card two weeks ago there must have been unanimous agreement that favorites should take the night off.

One trifecta I witnessed comprised a 34-1 winner, an 8-1 runner-up, and a 10-1 show finisher, The trifecta paid $1300 for $1. There were only two tickets sold, so $2600 represented the entire pool, plus takeout. I'm guessing they were purchased by the winning connections.

I can’t imagine what that combination would have paid at Saratoga. But all they can pay is 76% of what is wagered, right? I also saw a Pick-3 payoff on X-X-all, and a superfecta go to those holding X-X-all-all. Thankfully, I did not bet any of those races.

I also saw a jock, still in his last-race-of-the-day silks, having a cold beer at the outdoor bar next to the paddock. Another first was seeing the Governor and his First Lady of Idaho appropriately lead the post parade for the Governor's Cup, a stakes race worth $12,000.

They were on horseback, of course. She was riding a palomino that looked like it must have been worth more than all of the racehorses behind her combined. They both got a rousing ovation.

The Governor is Clement Leroy "Butch" Otter, Idaho’s 32nd. Otter is credited with saving horse racing sometime in late winter, which probably comes very late in these parts. His hat, belt buckle, and boots looked to be equal in value to his mount, a considerable sum, but entirely appropriate for a Republican.

One Friday, the entire card consisted of Q-H Futurity Trials. Good luck betting those unless you were on the inside. I stayed away that night and went to see the short-season Class ‘A’ Boise Hawks instead. The ballpark is right next to the race track, both within walking distance of our place.

I would call the place "sincere". It doesn't purport to be anything that it isn't. It attracts a young, mixed-gender crowd, most of whom stand on the apron sipping beers while having a social evening out, especially on Wednesdays, Ladies' Day, with free admission.

Some of the young girls get a bit gussied up; heels, big hats, fresh make-up. Others wear short shorts or short skirts, but always with cowboy boots. A veritable western Spa I tell ya’!

Food and drink are reasonably priced, as one might expect. There are no enhanced guest experiences here. They do have a Turf Club restaurant in a separate building near the clubhouse turn and a VLT-only casino. It is very small but they do try to promote it. My wife has already won a free large pizza in a drawing they have every race day following the 7th race.

There is no infield TV screen, no splits displayed during the running of the race, and no will-pays are available. Les Bois offers one horizontal wager other than the daily double; a single Pick 3 in the middle of the card.

One Wednesday, a horse I had been waiting for was entered in the middle of the three legs. I keyed her with the likely winners of the first leg and threw out all the entrants which had previously started in the last-leg maiden race. It worked!

The first-leg winner was 1-2, and a first-time starter won the third leg at even money. A $1 Pick 3 paid $7.50. Good thing I had it twice, a solid $3 profit.

Maybe if we offer the jock a slice of our pizza, he’d buy me and my wife a beer.

Hey, What Do I Know About Hockey?

CORONA, NY, January 26, 2014—It’s been a while since the boss has allowed me a little space to vent. I thought six months for what he called “impudence” was a bit too many days.

Give somebody a little power and they forget where they came from. But not me.

I need you all to know that, even if this is a horse racing website, I consider it my patriotic duty to bet on the Super Bowl, but I have to be honest; I don’t really have a feel for this matchup.

The obvious is to shade the Broncos. I know my man Marc Lawrence likes them (see his analysis on “The Big Game” right here on HRI.

Any big game, especially football, is all about momentum at payoffs time. This kid from Seattle certainly has had a big year but he’s been hot and cold through the tournament, as Coach Parcellls used to call it, sometimes even from one quarter to the next.

If baseball championships are about pitching and defense, football championships are about quarterbacks and defense. The Seahawks hold an edge on defense. However, on the other side of the scrimmage line is a surefire first-round Hall of Famer, one of the best quarterbacks in the game’s history.

And we go back to Charlie Conerly and Otto Graham and Bobby Layne and all those that followed.

Since we love the action, we got the skinny on a dizzying array of prop bets, which range from whimsical to serious football nerd stuff. For the uniformed, prop betting in Vegas is huge, with a capital U.
